I'm contemplating a revolver project. I would like to shorten the barrel of a Model 67 to three inches and convert to round butt. There is a place in Minnesota that does excellent work. If the front sight is removed then replaced on a three inch barrel, how is the poa/poi affected?

Hopefully, the answer will be that there is no change, unless you need to change the relationship. But, that would be an important question to add to the conversation you plan to have with the outfit who "does excellent work".

If they can't answer convincingly from experience, they may not be well qualified to undertake this modification.

Just my opinion, of course . . . unencumbered by any genuine personal experience. :o

POI should not change significantly. The mechanics of it are simple, but not so simply explained. POI will change as a result of changing the butt shape from square to round however, it will shoot lower due to the change in the roll center in your hand.

Is this also true with a change in grip style?

Make real sure that a SB to RB conversion does NOT alter the serial number on the butt. Get a pair of RB Magna grips and put them on the M67. If it looks like any of the SN will be removed, DON'T DO IT!!!

Yes it is.

And pay attention to what Muley Gil said. All to often people want to convert a square butt gun to a round butt, but in almost every circumstance this would result in obliterating a portion of the legal serial number. This is a federal crime under the GCA 1968 or the NFA.

If the project comes to fruition, the smith I would use is Ahlman's in Minnesota. They are an authorized repair facility for Browning for one, and I am sure others. The SB to RB conversion is one of the services they advertise, so I am sure that they do quality work and are aware of the serial number requirements.
But, thanks for that reminder. I am sure that some home smiths may have made the inadvertent mistake of altering the serial number.
