Front sight question

Looking to purchase a "pre Mod 29,4 inch". This gun does not have the red ramp front sight,but simply a checkered ramp. Does anyone have any input on this? I thought they all had the red ramp

The red ramp was standard on the 44 Magnum as introduced in 1956. I know of a couple that were ordered with plain ramps, but the front sight on the Magnum your are considering is most likely a replacement. A factory letter would be necessary to verify the special order front sight.

If the factory did it, no. It might even increase the value. If done after market, the quality of the work preformed matters.

If a quality replacement was done, the front sight could always have a RR installed.

Value might be positively affected if the 44 Magnum was originally shipped with a plain Baughman ramp. If the revolver was returned and the red ramp was replaced, it may reduce its value slightly.

If the ramp of the front sight base is truly "checkered" as you say, (not simply grooved matching the barrel rib), it's a Pre Model 27 or later Mod 27 front sight, not a Mod 29.

As far as affecting price....kinda depends on what the seller is asking. If he wants top-dollar price for a pristine gun, I'd probably pass without something to verify the front sight. If you are comfortable with the price, the front sight can be corrected later.
