I have a pre-28 Highway Patrolman that is in generally great shape.

The only blemish is on the front site . . . see pictures below:

The marks were there when I bought the gun many years ago so I don't know for sure what caused the problem. At first it looked like moisture got in between the barrel rib and the sight base but as I tried a little OOOO steel wool, it began to look more like vice marks. The barrel rib has very little damage but the sight base is marred pretty bad.

What can be done to repair the damage? . . . or should I just leave it alone? There appear to be two pins that hold the sight onto the barrel rib so I'm wondering if the sight can be easily removed, the marks removed and the base re-blued to match the original dull pre-model 28 finish.

Thanks for your thoughts & suggestions,

Russ

If the sight base is pinned to the barrel, it can be removed. Whether the gouges in the sight base are shallow enough that they can be removed and the base refinished is another question.

If the gun is just a shooter, I would touch it up with a little cold blue and keep shooting, but you are the only one who can make the decision.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. Since the marks don't affect sight picture, I'll just take it to the range and enjoy shooting it . . . not sure what I was "saving" it for!
