Is this stuff safe? I've got 2 small dogs. one 10lb one 8lb. I had a 10lb dog that has since passed on have an allergic reaction to the stuff. The reaction was skin only (like pimples) in the area of application. I swore I'd never use it again. The heat and rain this yr has produced more bugs than ever. I've sprayed their yard with the hose attached anti bug stuff a couple times a month.

We used Frontline for several years on our two mutts with no problems. We switched to Advantix about three years ago because the frontline stopped being effective. No problems and good results with Advantix. We don't necessararly use it monthly but when the itching starts reapply. Usually about 6 weeks or so. They also swim daily and it doesn't effect it.

There is also a once a month oral tablet you can try now. It's called Comfortis. My Vet recommended it to me to try. I gave it to our new puppy Max and I haven't seen any fleas so far. I don't know if they make it for dogs that small, or maybe you can give a half tablet if they don't. Ask your Veterinarian about it.

We've used Frontline for 10 years on one of our Golden Retrievers w/ no problems. We live in a rural area w/ lots of trees, too.

Occasionally, we have seen a live tick on one of the dogs but it is moving around and has not bitten in. We have never seen an embedded tick on one of the dogs--10, 5, and 2 years old.

Our vet cautioned us against buying the stuff online. According to him, it is way cheaper because it likely is counterfeit and might be dangerous for the dogs.

Depending on your climate, you might away w/ no application in December, January, or February, and save a few bucks. Also, there are several sizes depending on the weight of the dog or cat.

I have used the Frontline spray on both the dogs and cats for several years without any troubles. Even on the barn cat no one can get close to. If I can get her cornered and hit her with a squirt or two the ticks disappear like magic and it's advertised to be waterproof. It seems to last about 6 weeks or so. I usually wait till a tick shows up on one animal that's in the house then spray them all down again. Have had more on the wife and myself than the animals this year.

When we need to board our dog K9 AdvantiX is the only product they will allow. It is very good and also works well on ticks. It will not wash off. Not to be confused with Advantage.
If your dog weighs at the high end range, get the next higher dose. I wrote Bayer and that's what they told me.

My Jack RT is 20lbs so I buy the 21-55 lb dose and use 1/2 tube.

We buy it from Drs Foster and Smith online free shipping.

Frontline suck....I found flea on my dog and will change to something else.

I use Frontline on my 25 lb. Boston Terrier. It keeps the fleas and ticks off, but she acts "flighty" for 6 hours after treatment. She is having a heck of a time with itching this summer. I give her Benedryl and have use Cortaid. It helps some. We took a trip to Montana and Wyoming this June and she had no issues with itching. It must be something in this area (Ohio Valley). It seems like the recent heat wave really magnifies the problem.

I give both of my girls Benedryl. I am now also giving them fish oil since once a month baths might be drying them out. I put a dehumidifier in the living room thats pulling 2 gals of water a day. The window unit air conditioners ain't doing the job. Both dogs have settled down since the humidity is down to 40-45%. Dust mites pull H2O out of the air to live if humidity is above 50%. Below that they're less active. My smaller dog was going nuts today scratching. She is pink from stem to stern on her belly (normal color). I found a single bug, like a 32" on her. When I ditched the bug (not a flea) she was calm after that. No results after running a flea comb thru both dogs. My next door neighbor says her mini poodle is scratching up a storm.

The pill type flea & tick medicine gave our dog 'the running bubbleies'. (the Vet said it might)

Frontline works, Adantage or Advantix may work just as good or better. Not all dogs are the same. We use Frontline.

One flea brings you to that conclusion?

Exactly. The stuff works by sterilizing the flea. Birth control for the flea, and a lethal dose that kills it in a while. Most pet owners have contaminated houses. The critter only carries some of the fleas along with it. The rest commute by sleeping in the carpets, outside in the yard or on the porch and welcome mat. Even under your bed. All that happened was a flea caught a ride into your home, or was already there. The dog walked by and the flea jumped aboard.

Our routine was a pain. We caught the dog and cats and applied the meds, often against their will. Then my wife would dump the smelly stuff all over the carpets. She'd then wait the prescribed period and vaccum it up. Meanwhile, I was out in the yard with the critter spray. Special attention to the fence line where other dogs visit and poop, and inside where Ole Spot did his business. Dogs groom themselves and swallow flea eggs. They come out in the poop as worms and become fleas after the waiting period. Then they jump back on the dog for the ride indoors. They make good outdoor spray for killing fleas, flea larve, etc.

Whenever we went to the trouble, we could kill them off. For a while.

we use sentinal on our poodles,,1 pill a month,,we have never seen a flea on either dog,,we live in the country with a 5 acre yard,,and give the dogs regular baths. neither my wife or myself has ever seen a flea on the dogs... its kind of expensive (10 bucks per pill),, but it seems to work .

When Frontline quit working on our 40 lb Belgian Shepard, Comfortis was perfect. But, It did nothing for ticks. Had to get a collar for the ticks.

We now give both Belgians Advantix. It seems to work OK on fleas and ticks.

I have two collies. The breed is very sensitive to many medications and treatments. To control fleas, I use a natural method. I fill a spray bottle with half white vinegar and half water then shake it well. I lightly spray their coats and rub it in by hand. I use a flea brush regularly to remove any flea eggs before they hatch.

I use Frontline on Pugsters. It's effective and no side effects that I am aware of. Pugsters' veterinarian recommended it.

Yeah. That's the downside. It only works on fleas. The Vet did tell me that. The OP didn't specify ticks or fleas just bugs in the original post. So I threw it out there.

I don't think It's fleas or ticks. I run a flea comb through both of them at least twice a day. Both dogs are Chihuahuas. The vet tells me a single bug bite can give them an allergic reaction. We're all going to the vet Weds., again. The worms Mr. Burg mentioned are tape worms that are a parasite in fleas. I gave a Lhasa puppy to a woman I was dating at Christmas. Her and I and her kids were having Christmas dinner and here's this puppy wandering around dropping worms out of her butt.

I've always used Frontline Plus on my kids and never had a problem with fleas. Last year the vet mentioned Advantix was also good. I tried it. It wasn't long and the girls were itching a lot. After checking, they had quite a few fleas. I switched back to Frontline Plus, no more fleas. I'll stick with what I know works.
