I have an acquaintance who has a 4th Model .38 Doble Action that is marked "FRP 106." It belonged to his Grandfather. In my edition of the Standard Catalog, which is several years old, there is reference to 125 revolvers so marked that were apparently sent to a dealer/distributor in Boston, but the significance of the marking is not known.

I tried a search here but came up with no matches.

Does anyone know if this has ever been figured out or noted in a later edition by Supica and Nahas?

We have some ideas, based on the family history, but they are pure speculation.

Thanks in advance,

Tom

Suggestion: Assume the "P" stands for Police, then do an internet search for all towns, cities, counties, etc. that match "FR", for example Fall River, Mass. For any matches you get, then do a search of that entities Police Historical Assn for info, pictures of officers with S&W .38 DAs, etc. Do the same, with the assumption that "RP" might stand for Railway Police, and search all railroads beginning with "F" Hope that helps. Ed.

Thanks for the response. We've gone through the deductive process as you note and have an idea, but I was wondering if a later edition of Supica and Nahas has any more information than mine does, that is there were 125 so marked, but it's not known why.

Anyone have a recent edition of Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson who could check and see if this marking has been determined in a more recent edition. My copy is some years old.

Thanks in advance, Tom

SCS&W III says that they went to Lovell, Boston, possibly for the Falls River, MA police, but still nothing for sure.

Thanks for looking that up for me . . . Tom
