Another 1911 carrier...daily since 1976.

1976 to 1980 was a 1917 manufactured GI model. Then bought a 1952 Commander in .38 Super and carried that daily till 2007. In 2006 had another 52 Commander customized with full hard chrome and night sights and have carried it ever since.

99% of the time it has been tucked in the pants butt forward just behind the left hip. For many years no holster was used but now usually use a REMORA.

When I just can't hide the Commander I pocket carry a Kahr P380.

Also use grease on the slide rails and barrel with G96 silicone spray on the outside...never any stains on the clothing.

As to weather, I spent 12 years in Texas and extended time in Arizona and Florida..have never had a problem hiding a 1911.

Are you a lefty? Not trying to get personal, just curious.

Any additional thoughts on butt forward / strong side (if that's the case) carry? Cocked & locked?

My 1911 smith swears by it.

Make sure you get a classic 70 series, government model, with out all the hang on do dads and piccadilly rails, etc

Then just tuck it in your Jeans at the *** crack and flip your shirt over it. That's what single stacks are all about.

No, not a lefty.... Just like the way it carrys there. It is also out of the way of the seatbelts and I can draw with either hand.

Also with the butt forward it significantly demineses print...

Back in the "Jeff Cooper as God" days, a much slenderer version of myself (5'10"/155 lbs) carried an M1911A1 concealed under an untucked shirt regularly. Later, I carried a CZ-75 (pre hooked trigger guard) the same way (often overseas). It can be done.

These days I mostly carry a 4 inch S&W Model 65-1 concealed in a pancake holster. (5'8"/185 lbs)

I was going to suggest a LOBO IWB
worn just behind the hip-bone. Works
for me, and I'm pretty small,(& crippled up).
Your .45 will not make its presence known
to you or others.
I didn't think iit would work, until I actually
tried it.
Loose or untucked shirt, a nice leather vest,
a stiff leather belt. I use a fairly low priced
Tractor Supply belt. It's over 5 years old, and hasn't
shown wear or stress yet.

I'm 5'8" @ 175 lbs and I carried a alloy frame 1911 Commander for a while with no issues at all. It is still my go-to semi auto CCW though my FN HP is a close second and gaining. A Gov't would be a bit more of a challenge, but I'm confident I could carry one OWB at 4 o'clock with no problems.

IMO the 1911 is still the pinnacle of semi auto pistol design, and I've been shooting for 30 years and owned a lot of guns. Despite being a cheaper brand, mine has been brilliant, meanwhile I've had other guns, including Glocks, that were utter garbage. Saint John was a god-dang genius.

Since I posted above, I got a mil-spec Springfield Government and now realize I can carry it AIWB in a Blade Tech plastic holster just as easily as the Commander or FN HP.

Once the Springfield is ops tested, the Para will probly go in the safe for a while.

Every now and then, when I get that undeniable urge to pack my favorite all time semi-auto, I carry one of my 1911s. Yesterday, it was a Springfield Range Officer Elite CCO IWB with two spare magazines on the off side OWB. Sometimes, especially when the weather is right, I'll carry one of my 5" Springfields usually a parkerized Loaded model, but sometimes my MC Operator or a Mil Spec OWB. I always carry a full-sized 1911 at about 15:30 OWB. It feels great to carry real metal pistols with real steel magazines, even If it means I have fewer rounds on tap. The way I see it, it's very unlikely I'll ever need a reload or two, but I still always carry two.

Carrying a full size 1911 requires a good belt and holster. But you knew
that. On those occasions when I believe carrying the 1911 is in order,
I strap on this Milt Sparks belt and VMII IWB holster. I don't know of
anything that would be better.

I also carry my full size stainless 1911 in a VMII holster on a Milt sparks belt.

I am considering trading a couple of my pistols for a 1911 with a 4" BBL in 9mm if I can find it. I had a 1911 full length for a while and carried it concealed, as a matter of fact that is the first pistol I carried concealed after I got my CCP.

I used to carry all kinds of 1911's 3", 4" & 5"... I lost interest due to low mag capacity, complexity of the manual of arms & lack of reliability across the platform... If you can get past those things then yeah in a lightweight version the 4.25" and shorter versions conceal well and and very comfortable to carry... Get a good holster or two and you'll be in good shape but, avoid the advice above of sticking in in the small of your back w/o a holster or small of back at all, if you fall on your back with a gun stowed in that position there is a good chance you'll suffer a severe back injury...

I carried several custom .45acp 1911's over the coarse of about 25 years as a cop, on duty and off. I still love them and carry mine occasionally
or a custom BHP. I have had Combat Commanders and Commander's as well as an Officers model. Still love the Platform over many other styles. Never felt under gunned when carrying one either.

I use my 1911 for a paperweight on my desk and pocket carry a S&W Bodyguard 380. I don't have to pull my pants up all day or smell like a gas station with oil all over my clothes either!

Now c'mon!!! What the heck's wrong with gas station oil? A quart'll last a coupla years & it's a lot less expensive than Old Spice ;-)

That's it! Y'all have influenced me to leave my 340 M&P at home today and carry my Springfield RO Elite .45 in CCO format IWB. I feel so dirty.

A full-size 1911-A1 has the most perfect natural point of any handgun known to me. A perfect natural point makes point shooting a lot easier.

A full-size 1911-A1 is very easy to conceal. However, it is one heavy beast when loaded with 230 grain ammo.

A good quality 1911-A1 chambered for .45 ACP is amazingly accurate.

I still get an itch for the Springfield Armory Professional Model 1911-A1 .45 ACP (FBI Gun). But it comes in at better than $3500. tax & fees (more taxes) included. That's a lotta dinero for a gun that'll do a lotta safe sitting. However, it might be the king of all 1911-A1s. All I'd use it for is to shrink target groups.

I did compromise. I bought an SA EMP 3 9MM. It's a custom shop gun at factory price, which was more than I wanted to spend. It is a whole lot lighter than a full-size 1911-A1.
