I bought a nice 4" Model 28-2 a couple of years ago at a local gun show, and it was wearing these funky target stocks. I got a really good deal on that revolver because of these stocks. I thought that they were just some "cheapie" aftermarket stocks, but sometimes you never know. I plan on refinishing them but would hate to ruin a pair of valuable stocks. Any idea of the maker or value?

Sile for sure.

Of course a set like that might be fun to try your hand at shaving them down to see how they would come out. Maybe shave off the thumbrest, take the checking off.

My gut reaction was Herrett but after staring at them they don't look quite right. The Sile opinions are probably correct.

I would need to see the backs to make a better judgement, but if most of you think they're Siles, I'll go along with the crowd.

Sile model 77 also sold by Mershon with a Mershon label glued over the Sile box.

1962 ad photo shows the hint at finger grooves that are on the 77 but not on other Sile thumb rest grips.

A few more pics...

Here's a couple of more pics of my stocks. They're small and don't really fit my big mitts, and it looks like someone did some chiseling on the inside of the stocks to fit the Model 28-2. Maybe they're actually K-frame stocks? Sounds like the majority votes for Sile stocks from the 60's, so unless that changes with these pics, I'll go with that. I was hoping they were worth more than $50, but now I won't feel bad about refinishing them. Thanks for the inputs.

SILE FOR SURE, 100%

I collect thumbrest grips.
The stigmate of SILE grips are well visible in your pics.
The style of the checkering. The shape of the palm rest. The plain grain of the Italian walnut. The proprietary large brass escutcheon, nut, of the right panel. The inside has been milled, otherwise you would have read "made in Italy".
Alas, the thumbrest has been butchered too, for sure because it interferes with a quick case extraction. All thumbrest grips are conceived mainly for target shooting, doesn't matter if it slows the ejection of empty cases.
The value is around 40-50 USD, a refinish doesn't reduce it.
They were produced here in Italy for the SILE distributor located in NYC in the Seventies.

I doubt anybody would pay more than 20 bucks for these things, having been whittle on and re-inletted for an N frame.
