Funny noise coming from my S&W 629

You don't have a problem. It is just the hammer block rattling. It is in every modern S&W revolver unless they are "gunked up".

Use in in good health.

Does this rattle thing occur in 629's going back to 1990? Because mine rattles in two different ways actually.

Idont know what kind of grips you have but if a pin fell out of the grip it will move around when you move gun around.i thought i had a problem but a pin fell out inside the grip

I posted the same question last fall regarding a model 28-2 I purchased from a seller on Gunbroker. The friendly and knowledgeable people on this forum put my mind at ease regarding the issue. I wouldn't feel bad about the S&W gun you purchased because it makes a sound due to it working as designed. Enjoy your purchase. Take it to the range often. You'll wear out before it will.

As someone else has said here: If mine didn't rattle, I would be worried. The rattle you are hearing on your 629-6 is coming from the hammer block safety. You can see this part when the hammer is locked back. It looks like a little metal flag, with the flag pole riding inside a slot on the right side plate of the frame. When the trigger is pulled, this little part drops down and allows the hammer to strike the floating firing pin that is built into the frame of the revolver. If the trigger is not pulled, the part stays in place and thus prevents the hammer from falling on the firing pin and in turn prevents the weapon from discharging.

Unless you are mechanically minded, I would recommend against taking the revolver apart. I've had many revolvers brought to me in Zip-Loc bags, where the person that disassembled it couldn't get it back together again. There is really no need to do this unless you have a lot of dirt/dust/lint built up inside of the revolver. And as someone else brought up: without the proper tools, you can really butcher up the screws and make the revolver look "junky."

There is nothing wrong... If S&W made the tolerances so tight that you didn't hear a rattle, the revolver would start malfunctioning when you had a little build-up of powder residue/dirt/dust that naturally tends to cling to the same oil that you used to lubricate the revolver.

HAVE FUN WITH YOUR NEW REVOLVER!!!

Regards,
Mike

Now you've got ME confused. I have two new S&Ws: a 638-3 and a 625-9. Neither rattle. I replaced the rebound spring in the 638 with a lighter Woolf one and didn't see any rod riding inside the spring. I have had the rebound spring out of the 625 but haven't replaced it as the trigger pull is sweet enough as it is. It didn't have a rod inside the rebound spring either. What gives? I've never had a S&W in which I could hear the hammer block safety rattle (of course I'm more than a little deaf).

Cyrano, even just a drop of oil on the hammer block will retard it's ability to rattle; gun's got to be pretty dry for it to be heard.

As far as the N frame "trigger overtravel rod", seems like my older N frames have it, but I an not so sure about the newer ones, -5 and up. I don't really want to go down and get into the safe right now to see, but maybe one of the learned members can confirm if that is something that has gone the way of pressed-in frame lugs.

I just bought one yesterday, and it's got the same rattle. I was told it's normal.
