Well,
5-29-09' I'm back to being once again an employed drone.
July is another engineering/construction employee's pay free "month off". At this rate if current trends and commercial building occupancy rates continue, I figure I'll be having 30 days off again in October. 1 or 2 months a year pay free is far better than having your ass kicked out on the street. There's one "younger" guy that doesn't see the benefit of doing it this way, rather than straight layoff and unemployment insurance. Those of us who've been through stuff like this in the past know what the difference is. But that wisdom only comes after getting "experience", just like the poster says!

Commercial building occupancy in my area doesn't look good to me in the near term, or the far term in many cases. There has been a significant over supply of commercial buildings for going on two years now, and dramatically so in the last year. Businesses failing, consolidating, outsourcing to other countries, and putting employees on "remote" status with a laptop and black berry all lead to vacant commercial buildings as far as the eye can see. The only tenants I've seen move into the available commercial buildings is a couple of Churches. They probably got a lease rate that they couldn't touch in a traditional Church building.

What I don't understand is even with all this vacancy I still see a couple of brand new fancy commercial buildings being built, and once they are finished, most of them sit vacant with lease signs on them. I guess they had to build it because the bank loans had been approved or there were other aspects of contracts that had to be fulfilled. Maybe the potential penalties were more than the cost of completing the building?

Anyway, good to see the furlough is over, and the furlough route is much preferable to straight layoff for sure. Younger folks often severely underestimate the value of employment history equity. It can mean the difference between having a job, and not having a job coupled with few prospects.

Pretty much all we have been doing since the first of the year is (modest) remodels for tennants who are moving into smaller suites.Now even that is starting to dry up,I'm planning a little road trip since there is no work anyhow.
