this g-t was between the sig and the colt ar .22s but they felt they had to mention the best in class....

As we noted above, the Sig outshot the Colt with two of the three test ammos. Compared to the S&W with the Green Tag ammo common to both tests, the Colt and M&P15-22 were neck and neck in accuracy. The M&P shot 0.9-inch groups at 50 yards with the CCIs, and the Colt’s AGR was 0.94 inches. Our Team Said: A straight-up comparison between the Colt and the S&W M&P15-22 we tested isn’t quite fair, since the S&W had full-length rails and other options more comparable to the Colt OPS model. However, the Colt covers all the bases in duplicating the AR-15 experience, though incorporating so many nonfunctional "look" features (pins, bolt release, dust cover) gave us pause. Compared heads-up with Sig, the Colt is the hands-down winner if what you’re looking for is an AR experience with a rimfire. The Colt is certainly a quality gun, but its trigger-pull weight was a huge drawback—simply too heavy. For now, we have to recommend the S&W over the Colt if you want the AR-15 experience in 22 LR, and we have to pick the Sig Sauer over the Colt if you want a tactical rimfire without regard to the AR-15 controls.

Compared to the GT Grade A Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22, the Colt lacked Picatinny rails on all four sides of the handguard, using instead the standard M4 polymer handguard. (The OPS version has a full rail package.)

That's pretty much the consensus of the folks I have talked and shot with who own those rifles. If your priorities are a light weight AR platform then the 15-22 is the choice, period. Most folks I have talked to simply dismiss the Colt from consideration.

My Sig522 is the SWAT version. Here's what I can tell you about it.

----

It is heavy... real heavy... over a pound heavier than the 15-22 with it's half-pound factory sights on, and the Sig SWAT comes with no sights. If you took the sights off the 15-22 it would weigh in right at 5lbs versus the Sig SWAT at a whale-scale whopping 6lbs 6oz. Did I mention the Sig is heavy? :(

Just reading the short snippet from GT, it looks like GT found the Sig to be accurate. I have found that to be true. (not true with my 15-22. YMMV). It feeds all ammo types. Action is silky smooth and flawless in operation. Trigger is smooth out of the box and is a pleasure to shoot with. The Sig feels refined. :)

The stock is folding and adjustable. One big difference is that the stock is positioned lower so you don't have to fool around with those danged risers or towering rings to comfortability see through optics. :)

The grip has storage, but is short and fat. I don't like it. If you like the Houge grip like I do I bet you won't like the Sig grip. I see no aftermarket grips available. :(

Ambidextrous safety and mag release. Side charge handle. :)

The mag actually holds the bolt open on last round. To keep the bolt from slapping forward during magazine removal requires you to manually engage a bolt catch lever. :(

Front and rear sling attachment points, plus a single point QD mount. :)

The mags are .22 conversion style, so you can use BD mags (in various capacity) or CMMG mags. :)

Metal upper, ploymer lower, metal numbered quad rail.

I've looked around but don't see any accessories to chose from other than rail mounted stuff. Maybe that will change with time since this is a fairly new release. :(

I shot Phils 522 and agree that it is a refined rifle, it is a comfortable shooter. I actually liked that it was a little heavier than the MnP, the recoil impulse was less making follow up shots faster for me. I was able to just pick it up and put lots of accurate shots downrange.

I didn't like the colt at all, mostly because when you open it up, it looks completely non user serviceable.

I like to take my stuff apart and put it back together.

HI Jeff,

Just got back from 2hrs of plinkin craziness at CRC. I stripped everything off the 15-22 except the PA Micro Dot and 4 Larue clips. Featherweight fun playing shotgun shell tag. The 15-22 held her own with a tricked out 10-22. What a blast!

Glad you liked shooting the Sig. So do I. The Sig and S&W are so different that ya just gotta own both!

I agree that you have to own both. My 1'st 22 black rifle was a Colt/Umarex M4, it shot okay and looked cool but poorly designed. The Colt is totally outclassed by the Sig 522 and the S&W M&P15-22. The M&P is light and handles exceptionally well, plus the controls mimic a centerfire AR making it my number one choice. Closely following is the excellent Sig 522. I just posted a side by side range report. Both shot very well at 100 yards and are just plain fun to shoot.

Also, Hi Phil.

I wish I could have plinked a bit tonight. I did get to shoot my pellet gun for a little while. I have some spinners set up at the very back corner of my lot. I have a scoped Gamo and pretty much wear them out.

I was rearranging my rifles tonight and I am completely amazed at how light the 15-22 is compared to pretty much everything else I own.

It is as light as a toy, but proves itself at the range. My impressions of it before and after shooting it are completely different. It feels real in my hands now. Looks like I will get back to the range (PC) sunday.

Jeff,

That's the mode I'm in right now with the 15-22 -- Light weight. It'll change after a bit... That's one thing that the 15-22 can do better than any.... morph into whatever you want it to be.

Shopping around for my Sig I found the best local prices at GT Distributors Rossville, GA. $539 for the SWAT version. $450 for the Swiss style plastic forearm.

e-mail me if for sure you are going to PC Sunday. I may be up there too :). Maybe Forum member Falling_Water will go too with his 15-22.
