Looking to pick the brain trust. I bought a Shield Plus about three years ago and regrettably didn't buy the MOS version. I love the gun and have decided I would like to try a red dot on this pistol. Up to now I have only used irons and lasers on my handguns.
Galloway Precision sells an optics plate that utilizes the rear sight dovetail for mounting. This would obviously mean giving up the rear sight. Which brings me to my question - what are your thoughts on this approach in general and losing the rear sight?

I would spend the extra hundred bucks and get the slide milled by Nameless Armament.

You can also buy factory optics ready Shield Plus slides for low $200s online. I can message you some links, if you want.

However, if you're not sure if you'll like using a dot or not, the dovetail mounts are an option.

Downside is that your dot sits higher over the bore, and there's the theoretical possibility there's more weight/force than your dovetail was intended to take over the long term.

Some red dot classes will have you shoot with the red dot off or covered with tape to replicate having a dead battery, washed out dot, or broken window. I'm not exactly Jelly Bryce when it comes to instinctive/point shooting, but I was still able to make reliable center mass hits when I did those drills.

It's a viable option, outerimpact makes a similar product that I used on my 9EZ for over a year as my EDC. Worked great.

Great way to try red dots, but ultimately either buying a new slide or having you existing milled Is the better option.

I've tried them on two different guns with Galloway and Outer Impact and both would lose zero and on a third gun, I couldn't get enough ajustment to zero the windage. I finally gave up and purchased a milled slide for one and put the irons back on the other two.

I am getting ready to send an M&P 1.0 slide to Pinewood for machining but I also have a backup slide as well. Please remember that if you don't like the Red Dot and remove it that you will have sort of an ugly exposed slide cut with screw holes visible and you may also lose your rear site in the process. Just an FYI.
