I was gifted a Garmin nuvi 200 gps unit. Age unknown. Can this unit be up-dated with current maps or would the cost of doing it be worth while?

If it were to be up-graded, how would you go about it ?

I believe you can, but I don't know for sure. I do know for updates etc you will have to go to the Garmin website and you'll need a USB to Mini-USB cable to do it. I'd hit Garmin's site and see what they have there. Worst case wait til Monday and give em a call. The customer service is first rate, and it's done right there at headquarters in Overland Park, KS by real live Americans.

I had a Garmin Nuvi, forget model number, that I bought for under $200 maybe five years ago. I updated it for $80 two or three years ago. This summer I bought a new one, bigger, for $200, which has free lifetime map upgrades. (I think they are free because it comes with advertising, fairly inconspicuous.)

I think you can buy small basic models for just over $100 new...

My wife and I both have Garmins. You can go to their site and purchase a single update ( load your garmin to your USB before going, have your Mdl and Ser# written down ). Or, you can purchase Lifetime updating for $119.00.

Since buying ours, we've updated several times ( they send an email notification when an update is available ).

Something to keep in mind: A road/highway may have been recently finished in your area, but updates can take up to 18 months to be ready at their site.

For what my fellow drivers and I need, the old nuvi200w is
just great. I can get good deals on them on e-bay. As far as the
upgrades are concerned, some used ones were either never registered with Garmin, or the single free map up-grade was never used. When you go to their web-site, and register your self, with Username and Password, then go to where it says to register your unit. Of the last
four I've acquired, two had a free update coming and they and one other
were never registered, so I put them in my name and registered them and got the two free updates by download. The fourth was registered, but had a recent update. You used to have to spend $10 bucks for the first update by DVD in the mail, or spend 2-1/2 hours on a 1.4 G-byte
download. Way faster now. The website reads the info on your GPS, and tells you what you need. Hope that helps, TACC1.
