Since a Magpul plastic front sight will melt if the weapon is fired a lot will a iorn front sight work. I have a M&P15 OR and bought the Magpuls before I even got the weapon home and to my horror the fron sight will not fit. Any help would be appriciated.

Sorry to hear this. I'd get a flip up front sight. Diamondhead, American Spirit Arms and Daniel Defense come to mind (so as many others, yes).
If you are looking for a fixed front sight I'd recommend Daniel Defense. They come as set if you prefer having a DD rear sight as well.

Magpul Pro is another good choice for a gas block mount Although, the polymer magpul should fit, the OR's gas block rail is standard picatany rail spec - it's just not a good idea to run it. The Pro version (steel) is fine. Or Troy, or any of the others already mentioned. A lot of OEM sights are rebranded Troy/MI design as well.

A good set of iron sights will cost almost as much as a decent scope. If you plan on scoping the rifle and not using the sights except as backup, save your money and buy the scope first. That way you can enjoy the rifle and buy the irons at a later date.

Optics are a wonderful thing but any combat style rifle should first have iron sights (I prefer Troy or DD), properly adjusted and the shooter proficient with same.
If the rifle is strictly for target or varmint this is not as great a need but a decent optic and mount( magnify or electronic dot) will cost $500 and up....cheaper is rarely better.

I got a decent/good Bushnell optic for a lot less than $500. It is a 1x4 magnification, is illuminated and has a throw lever to quickly go from 1x to 4x and has a bullet drop guide so you don't have to readjust when you go out to 200 yards, etc.
Yes, any metal sight will work. Stay away from the UTG and NCStar stuff, they don't hold zero as well as Daniel Defense, Magpul Pros, Diamondheads, etc...
Hold on the the polymer MBUS, I keep a set in case I just need to test fire a weapon until I get the optic/iron sights that I want in. Usually those are the last things I put on a build.

I'll be 100% truthful. If you shoot at a slow rate, the gas block shouldn't get hot enough to melt polymer. If you're rapid firing or doing mag dumps, then the polymer will melt like a marshmallow held over a campfire.
MichiganScott's advice is the most rational. Good iron sights are expensive, but they'll last a lifetime. If you're not going to shoot irons often, get that optic first.

Have this one on mine, YHM-9396. Works great, but I got a slapped on the hand about the idea you might burn your fingers on it when dropping it down are raising it up under fired conditions. No way does it transfer heat to the point you can not touch it
It pivots on a small pin which can not transfer that much heat to the upper part off the sight. Now for the base wrapped around the barrel, hell yes it will bite you. Like anything else be cautious.

I came here to post this.
I have a 308AR with an ARMS front sight, and yeah, it is polymer. No issues, as the rifle really does not hustle ammo at a retarded rate.
But, FWIW, my son's rifle has polymer Magpul sights on it. And he has been known to send enough ammo downrange to make a SAW scared...... The Magpul sight has been stinky from getting so hot, but it's still hanging in there, after 2 years.

AGoyette, i was not to suggest scopes are not great shooting aids, I have that same Bushnell on an AR...just voicing my opinion that open sights and proficiency with same should come before the optic on a combat style rifle, but I am an old guy who grew up with a Winchester 1890 and ammo from selling collected pop bottles.

I have had good luck with both Troy and Yankee Hill folding sights (the Troys will fold down slightly lower), and the Daniel Defense fixed sights have been fine. I just prefer the folding sights if I have a red dot mounted.
