Gas ring question

I have a 1982 686 I need to change the gas ring on. I bought 2 from Numrich and the outside diameters are stepped. Which end goes in first? On my 1970's guns it looks like the larger diameter went in first but on the newer ones it looks like the small end is like a pilot and went in first.

The old one I removed from the 686 looks like the small end went in first. Since the walls of the larger diameter end are thicker than the other it would seem the thin end would be first so the thicker wall could resist the gas cutting.

You are correct. The larger diameter/thickness end of the ring goes out....the smaller thickness end is press fit into the cylinder. You can confirm this by measuring the recess in the cylinder that the ring is pressed into after removing the old ring. Some fitting to length may be required.

I would add that some fitting of the inside diameter of the new gas ring may also be required.
I replaced the gas ring on my 586 no dash, and I had to trim the length and fit the inside diameter of the gas ring to the yoke.

Correct. I installed it and inside diameter needed to be reamed and length trimmed.
