Gator Hunting

I drew slot tags this year for the first time in SC for alligators. With the slot tag I have to use a handgun to dispatch. I'd like to use one of my 617's but a little concerning having it hang over water while so much else will be going on. Any suggestions on Lanyards? Thinking about it, it may not be the best idea to use a clip of any kind in the trigger guard, so would probably have to be a loop of para cord or something similar.

Sounds like a good time to borrow a Gun!
Just kidding!
I would remove the grips, then loop Paracord through the end of the butt.
Tie a small loop that sticks out an inch or two below the butt.
Then slap on some Pachs, cinch them down.
Then a long loop of Paracord or other strapping through the small loop, long enough to go around the neck.

Great idea, and I actually have a set of grips that I bought at a pawn shop 10+ years ago, never been out of the packaging. This is the perfect use for them! Thanks

A .22 LR (or .22 WMR) revolver is definitely the better choice over a .22 semi-auto pistol...you wouldn't want a F2F when you've got a large gator pulled up to the side of your boat! For many years, shark fishermen and gator hunters in Florida used CCI Stinger ammo (revolvers and rifles) to dispatch their catches with head shots. The Stinger tended to tumble and made short work of the animals' long, narrow brains. There are probably many choices of quality .22 ammo that would work well these days. Good hunting!

A cousins husband was a professional guide for gator hunters here in this area. He used a bow and arrow when hunting gators here.

Years ago in the American Rifleman, a "reader writes" told of using strapping tape to attach a D ring to a revolver frame and then using the aforementioned Pachmayr grips. That's the same idea as suggested above but the strapping - or whatever - tape would be thinner.
