Thanks to this group, I got a 10.5" 300aac upper from BCA a week ago and waiting for NFA paperwork to clear.

Optics scheme: buy iron sight first then a 1x vortex red dot?

Prism or otherwise?

Is the mbus good enough to cowitness?

As someone who recently purchased a Vortex Spitfire 1x Prism Scope, I can easily say that now is the time to buy one since they're on sale.

The etched reticle means that even if the batteries run out, the optic is still usable. As for co-witness, out of the box, a Gen 1 Spitfire sits at a height which provides a 1/3 co-witness, and I'm not sure that it would even work out at that due to how blurry the front sight appears through the scope.
Fortunately, you don't really need iron sights with a prism scope, so it's kind of redundant/superfluous to co-witness with one anyway.

Thanks for the response. With the spitfire one has to decide 1x,3x,5x.if you get a 3x, is that an issue up close? Some of rhese have a 4 moa dot…..isn't that huge?

Be warned that Prism optics have a short eye relief like a typical rifle scope. That is 3.7" for the Vortex Spitfire 1x Prism Scope that also has only a 75' field of view at 100 yards !

Vortex Crossfie 1-4x24 scope has 100' FOV at 100 yards a slightly longer eye relief and cost less and still has the option of a lighted reticle if needed . There is also a 1-6x24 options too like vortex strike eagle
We have green and red dots depending on what your eye likes best also a 1-8x24 on my wifes ar15 and a 2.5-10x42 on mine . But I have used a 2.5-10 since '73 and short range is not an issue for me .

Understand with a Dot Optic you can always add a magnifier behind the dot optic . Flip it over out of the way if not needed and have a 3 to 5 power when needed . You might check out Holosun HE515GM-GR or RD or the HE503CU-GR or red version . If color blind they have a gold dot optic version all with there typical 50,000 hor battery life . I have a 10.5 inch 5.56 with the green holosun and my wife has a 10.5 9mm version with an early primary arms md-ads red dot on it but built just like the holosun .

Yes a 4moa dot is large but it can depend on what your use to and what you want to use it for . I still prefer ether a 2moa dot or a scope with fine line bdc recital . Not that Holosun offers a circl dit . 2moa dot with a 65moa circle on some models . Figure that 65: circle covers 32.5 at 50 yards and 16 inch at 25 yards . That makes bracketing a silhouette easy at 25 yards easy under stress at shorter yardage .

Lots of choices out there that folks use and like .

Magnified prisms with etch and illumination are very short learning-curve. I'd keep it at 3 and under. When time allows, just stand around and simulate so that you gat that quasi - muscle memory deal going. Super alternative to red dots. Have never illuminated in daylight though it's there if needed.

I wouldn't know, mine is a 1x, which I specifically chose because the ranges I intended on using it are all within 100 yards.
