As discussed in a few other threads, I wanted to add a micro red dot to my CHiPs 4006TSW. I initially accomplished this using the Optima mount recommended by Guzzitaco. This worked fine, but it was high up and it left me using the tiny little rear sights that are machined into the optic as a backup. It was a usable setup, but I wanted to go further….
I had my CZ P-07 cut for an RMR/507c footprint by Wager Machine. They were fast, cheap, and good, but they only will cut a few types of common pistols that are still in production (modern CZs, Glocks, and M&Ps basically). No dice on having our beloved 3rd gens milled by them.
I checked in with several other gunsmiths / milling specialist and most said no or were ridiculously expensive. Then I came across Impact Machine. They are well known for doing a great job milling CZs for optics, and the owner is the son of the owner of Cajun Gunworks (the place for CZ upgrades). Lo and behold - their Insta had an image of a 3rd Gen slide cut for a plate to accommodate and RMR/507c footprint. The safety was pulled in the pic, but it was a start! I contacted them and they agreed to cut my slide for a 407k footprint! Woot!
To preserve my original 4006TSW slide, I bought a 4043TSW slide on eBay. I removed the safety plug and installed a single sided safety from a spare 910 slide I picked up. I tested this Frankenstein slide on my 4006TSW AND my 5906TSW and it worked fine. The safety worked, the magazine disconnect worked, the firing pin would fling a pencil across the room, etc…
Good enough for me, so off it went. I asked for a back up iron site to be installed because I prefer a decent sized metal sight.
I just got the slide back today and I am very happy with it! Impact Machine milled the pocket nice and low in the slide. The optic is positioned above the extractor pin, so the right recoil stud is abbreviated, but it still grabs just fine. Between the two recoil studs, the front and rear potions of the pocket, and the screws, it feels very solid. They added a Dawson Precision Glock rear sight behind the optic, which looks great and seems like it would be very functional. I haven't zero's it yet, but it looks like it may even be pretty close to a lower 1/3 cowitness with the factory night sights!
I can't wait to get it to the range this weekend!
For me, this just cements that the 3rd gen pistols can still hang with the modern boys and can take advantage of all the same features that more modern pistols have. This pistol can take a light, an RDS, and can switch between .40 and 9mm. Not too bad for the last gasps of a 70+ year old design!
