Because finding out before the birth gives that (totally fake, of course) sense of control that so many crave today. Wait 9 months to find out the answer? That just doesn't work for people these days.

I think you hit the nail on the head about being in control. Kind of like the maskers thinking they are somehow in control of something much bigger by wearing a simple mask.
America's Funny Videos could probably do an hour of fools hitting themselves in the tool with the pink or blue poppers.
