I like a sip of Jack Daniels of an evening. However when the bottle got low, I went to the Class 6 store, but they were out of the 1.75 liter size. They had Gentleman Jack, which I've been wanting to try. The bottle says 'twice mellowed". It's twice mellowed, all right; it has practically no flavor at all. That's my last bottle of Gentleman Jack. Anybody else have an opinion, pro or con, about this moose juice?

Dunno about that, but I 'phoned the factory to ask the difference between green label and black label Jack Daniels. The black is aged five years; the green just four.

Thought that inquiring minds might like to know.

I gave up on Jack Daniels years ago. If for some reason I can't afford, find, or have a midway decent Scotch or Irish whiskey, then I'll just drink Old Crow. Old Crow is a lot like drinking bore solvent, or maybe paint thinner. I remember one reviewer once described it as like drinking barbed wire and rusty razor blades. You know that you've become a rough customer when you can swill it down like a babe does mother's milk.

If you didn't like it then don't try their Single Barrel either...

I'm more of a rum guy and I find that some of the lower shelf brands taste better then the stuff that gets their name thrown around all the time. Maybe it's time to buy a few small sample bottles.

Used to drink Jack
now its Wild Turky, Jim Beam, or Evan Willams.

I keep a bottle of Jack Daniels in the house for cooking. For drinking I keep a bottle of Tullamore Dew handy.

Jack is getting pretty pricy so I think I will find cheaper swill to use when cooking.

I rotate around depending on what strikes my fancy when I run low. JD was always a staple in my cabinet, and I had one of the original bottles of Gentleman Jack ever bottled. It wasn't enough different for me to pay the additional tariff when it ran out.

I like pretty much all dark liquors, buy a lot of Maker's Mark, J&B, Buffalo Trace (especially their single barrel stuff), Glenlivet and probably a few others. When all else fails, I pick up the J&B. The Buffalo Trace and J&B seem to go well with my favorite cigars too.

Try some Old Grandad, get the "Bottled in Bond" version.

I like the original more than the Gentleman. Have not tried the one above Gentleman though.

I have switched to bourbon, Makers Mark specifically. If its a special occasion Glenlivet 15.

I used to drink single malts exclusively, but I've gone more to some of the fine American whiskeys and bourbons. Try the Makers 46. I've never been a blackjack drinker.

I tend to stay away from corn whisky, and generally stick with rye. Overholt over store ice is what I drink at motorcycle rallies. Over the years, I have made a lot of converts from bourbon and other corn whiskies.

I have found that JD's different "levels" will taste different depending on what you mix it with. I've always said that a person learns to drink what they learn to steal and my Grandfather drank Black Jack and water therefore that's all I mix mine with.

Things have been changing around Jack Daniels. I used to live in Tullahoma and have been to the distillery more times than I can remember. I have some property about four miles from Jack and more in Franklin County (on the Moore County line). Regular Jack (Black Label) used to be of a higher proof. It's 80 proof now, along with GJ. The Single Barrel is 94 proof, and each bottle/barrel will taste differently. The Scenes From Lynchburg is 86 proof, which is closer to the way it used to be. My Brother used to drink Dickel white label, which I think is pretty good tasting whiskey, but if you can find it, Dickel Barrel Select is some of the best Tennessee sipping whiskey out there. When I was growing up in Tullahoma it was all moon shine then, and darn good moon shine at that.:D

Don't much care for the Gentleman Jack, do like the JD Single Barrel though. Found it to have a slightly different taste bottle to bottle and that appealed to me.

Never got much of a taste for that fancy stuff and the fella I knew that used to make some fancy grape juice out of scuppernongs passed away. Some other guys were going to take over but the sheriff found the grape juice maker and got all upset.

I did take our friends in Dublin a bottle of Jack that we bought duty free on the flight over to Ireland and you would have though I brought him an ounce of gold. Had to explain to him what a dry county was though. Seems they don't have those in Ireland. ;)

Maybe I'm a wuss, but I personally really enjoy the smoothness of Gentleman Jack. However, during my young, dumb years, I didn't mind Clear Springs pure grain alcolhol straight up either, so maybe the JD is just me mellowing out in my forties. I also enjoy Maker's Mark immensely. Regular Black Label is good to me too. Can't find much wrong with No. 8 George Dickel either. Maybe I'm just an alcoholic at heart, and can't find fault with any of it. :)

If given the choice between 'Old Crow' something else, I'll take Ed's Red.
It's much smoother and has a nice finish if you use name brand ATF.

I drink all 3 versions of Jack. The Single Barrel is my go-to with a good cigar because I love the taste and it does stand up to ice very well. My favorite sippin' whiskey! I never mix JD in any form with anything but ice.

Regular Jack is what I usually have when having a drink before dinner or at a BBQ or party.

GJ is just a really smooth version of the regular JD, and I do drink it on rare occasions that I just want a nice mellow drink. The GJ will get watered down quickly though when left to sit with melting ice. Not really meant for mixing.

I have Wild Turkey, Dickel, Jim Beam, Makers Mark, OGD, and at least 5 other Bourbons in the liquor cabinet as well, but I am a true JD's Afficianado. Oh, by the way, for those of you who prefer regular Bourbon, try the Wilford's Reserve and Blanton's. They are both excellent!!
