I have a Command 1 boot knife, like new in the box.

This whole package is complete as the day it was purchased a few decades ago.

I cannot locate a proper serial number listing for this model.

If someone is familiar with the Command 1 I would appreciate any assistance on getting a born on date.

Serial number 016781

Thanx,

bdGreen

It makes me so sad that Gerber discontinued these, but kept the Mark II.

I preferred their Guardian series, especially the version with about a five inch (?) blade. I think Bob Loveless designed those.

Actually, the Puma Hunter's Pal makes a good boot knife, if provided a suitable sheath for that use.

Are those Gerbers collectible?

There’s a lot of information on the MKII’s because of their use in the Vietnam war. I couldn’t find specific info on boot knives, but this may help.

According to this, the Command I was made from 1981 to 1984. Their example has a nylon sheath and the upright logo, so yours is probably earlier in the run.

This link shows the various logo used on MKII’s. They MAY have used the same logos on the boot knives, so it may help narrow it down.

Nice knife, good luck!

My Gerber boot knife has a 5" blade, very sharp as it has never been used. It has the Gerber symbol and Gerber, Portland, OR USA on one side of the blade next to the handle. On the other side it has a serial number. The handle feels like sandpaper. According to photos I found using a search engine, it is a Command 1 knife, with boot sheath. I carried it for many years. I take very good care of my equipment so it looks new. I am quite fond of it, but depending on the value, I may sell it.

I carried a Gerber Guardian on my LBE in the Army. The leather sheath finally fell apart but I was able to find a nylon one. That knife still gets carried sometimes, clipped inside of my Tony Lama boots.

My Command I spent a year in the Australian Outback with me, and then 3+ years in the IDF. Doesn't look as nice as some of the above, but it has done its share of work. Still attached to one of my AR or AK LBE rigs.

I didn't know that there was a Mk I. I've had this Mk II for almost 50 years.

I still have the leather sheath, but I carried it in this Mk 8 Army sheath. Given its service, it's still in remarkably good condition.

Just for giggles, here is a family pic of my Gerbers. From Top to bottom:

I bought them all used. The first one I got was the Command II in a pawn shop outside Fort Leonard Wood about 1983. I carried it my whole time in the Army. The other ones were pick ups at gun shows throughout the years. The Mark II came with the extra nylon sheath.

I was wondering about that "Command" I. I have a Mark I. I was wondering if it was the same knife, and if so why the name change. The serial number on mine is 33435. Apparently the Command was before the Mark.

The Command knives came out around 1980 and was Gerber’s response to critics of double edged blades.

It was kind of like taking the bayonet lug off of AR15s...

Have 2 Mk II with brown sheaths left. Last one I found at flea mkt for 20 clams with black sheath, gave to son years ago. I carried a Mk II in my boot in Vietnam. Few days before leaving gave it to an ARVN Lt., told him, “ here, you may need this”. Wish had sent it home, found it under the dash of a M-151 we inspected for turn over to ARVN’s. Was early canted blade one .)~:

I used to have a 80's era Guardian that managed to grow legs at some point. Really miss that knife. Most everything they still make in that pattern has serrations now, which I cannot stand. I have checked out the newer non-serrated Guardians but they just do not have the same feel or quality IMO.

Command I has a serrated partial back edge, where the Mark I is double edged, and is basically a shorter version of the Mark II, although the Mark II has serrations on both edges, but halfway up the blade.
I have a Command I, a Mark II, and a Tac II, all from around 1982-83. The Tac II, although the blade is wider, is a lighter weight knife than the Mark II.

I have a Gerber Mark II (below). It's a late model, circa 2018 I'm guessing. The other knife is made from a railroad spike.

I also have a Gerber Frisco Shiv dagger (left), made circa 1983. The other knife is a Cold Steel dagger of recent manufacture, made in Taiwan, one-piece steel.
