Getting extremely frustrated while searching for a car.

The car buying gods aren't on your side.
Take the hint and quit looking.

Your "taste" (wink / nod) in automobiles leaves some to be desired but that's a different conversation for a different day. LOL

My current car is the first automatic I've owned. I wish I had chosen differently. They put so many gears in cars these days to save fuel that I feel like my car is always searching for a different gear. I want to control what gear I'm in, not the soon to be hacked computer chip under the hood.

Turn the radio up and you won't notice the shifting any more.:p

I only buy Subaru’s. My sons Subaru needs head gaskets at 165k. He bought a new Subaru.

The operative word.....

When I was younger I always preferred manual trannies....

The operative word here is 'younger'. Manuals can be utilitarian on some vehicles and fun on some vehicles (under good driving conditions) but I'm pretty much past all of that.

It stands to reason that my first full auto tran car was a Chrysler Concorde with a bum transmission that crapped out at 60,000 miles. Took out a loan to get it fixed and it crapped out again not too much later. Car went to the Kidney Foundation.

I've actually looked into everything from the Miata to the Toyota 4Runner.
4Runner, Forester, etc makes more sense to most people, but I like the casket/cockpit/personal space/go-cart feel of a small car.

Volkswagen GTi still commonly come in five speed standard transmission. Probably not a great car for snow though :)

My last car was a Corolla five speed. After ten years, I gave it to my mother (she had been driving a silverrado manual transmission V8 which got to be too big for her at 70) in perfect shape with 100k on it. Within a year a deer got in her way and totaled the car (but the police got a five point (?) buck). Now she drives a honda fit (which I dislike) automatic. She claims to like the Fit, but sometimes she says she misses the corolla.

A Mini Cooper 6 speed manual available in most all models including an all-wheel drive SUV/wagon

I've been a Ford man all my life. First one was a Model A. Owned other brands & liked them but always returned to Fords. I bought a 2007 Ranger in 2010 with 20 K on it. it's 4x4 5 speed & King cab 4.o V-6. As I'm alone now & going up in years it's all I need. Going on 89 grand now & doing fine. Once in a while I get questioned why I bought a stick shift. I reply, My first car had a stick why change?

I had a 2006 Miata 5 speed that was the perfect example of an overgrown go-kart. The cockpit is really tight and small. LOL I broke off many cigarettes on the windshield post because the steering wheel is so close to the windshield. Anyone over 5'10" will not even like driving it for any distance. It got 34 mpg hwy on regular gas. That car could turn like it was on rails. The top couldn't be any easier to put up or down.
I traded it off when it was only around 6 months old for even up $$ on a 2006 Chevy Malibu V-6 that had almost the exact mileage as the Miata had. I actually liked the Malibu much more. It also got around 32 mpg hwy.
I don't think a person can go wrong with a small Toyota or Honda. I think the Toyota will cost less.
