Stopped in LGS today as I had some time to spare running errands. Don't own a Glock but carried a 23 before retirement. The young guy behind the counter asked if I had seen the Gen5. Had not so he was showing it to me. The grip had a cut out on the front bottom. Asked him what it was for and he didn't know. I assume it is for easier gripping the magazine when extracting it?

Anybody know?

Clue me in a# I have never had or handles a Glock. Do you actually have to extract the magazine by hand. With my Ruger LC9s, Remington 389, MP 22 Compact, and SD9 the mags just drop out when the releases is pushed? If you actually have to hand extract a magazine it is a real liability. Someone, please get me up to date on Glock mag extractions.

Mine always dropped out. It was an early Glock. Assume they still do. The cut out was half moon shaped and caught my attention immediately.

Wider if someone made a modification?

I own a G43, G30SF and a G21.
All Gen 3's and the mags drop free.
Had G19's both 3rd and 4th gen and mags dropped free.
I guess Glock is just fine tuning the tupper ware.
Perfection you know.

The early Glock mags were specifically designed to not drop free. Glocks were designed for military use and the thinking was - do you really want to lose your mags in the mud on the battlefield? You might need to reload them and use them again.

I've got a couple of pre-ban G19 mags that do not drop free. When you push the mag release they drop about 1/2", then you have to physically pull them the rest of the way out of the gun.

ThT is pretty amazing. Obviously the Glock guy who came up with that rationale never was in combat. I had ocassions ro use my M1911 in close quarter combat, and I can assure you that I did not give a damn about empty mags falling into mud, sand, water, etc. the only mags I cares about were those with rounds in them.

Maybe they figured if you can't hit what you're aiming at with the first 17 rounds the extra 2 seconds to swap mags won't really make a difference.

: )

It was also supposed to help to keep from accidentally losing a full mag in the event of the mag release being hit during rigorous movement.

The half-moon cutout on the front strap of the Gen5 Glocks is for stripping out a stuck magazine (stuck for what ever reason). It is a feature that has appeared and disappeared over the years. I have a Gen2 model 19 that has the cutout. I have an early Gen3 model 17 that also has the cut out. My later Gen3 model 34 does not have it and it is my understanding that none of the Gen4's (commercial anyway) have it. In 20+ years of running Glock's I've never had magazines stick.

You are correct about the cutout.
I had a G22 police trade in that had that front cut.
I think it was a gen 3.

That cutout has a lot of glock shooters with larger hands complaining, because it can become painful after a day of shooting. And like the others have said, mags don't get stuck all that much anymore so its not like it was a needed addition.

And it wasn't for the mil contract either because the 19X doesn't have it.

Thanks for responses. I assumed that's what it is for. I just didn't recall my model 23 that I carried for work having it. Think it was a Gen 3.
