Glock Magazine Floor Plate

Did someone post a method to remove a Floor Plate of a Glock Magazine??

You have to really squeeze the mag body to slide the plate off.

I am a mere mortal and do not have the finger strength so I use a small c clamp padded with leather.

Just a little bit, does not take much. Could use a padded vise also.

I have a DVD where the gunsmith uses a punch through the bottom hole
in the floor plate. He pop's those puppies off like it's nothing. Basically he inserts
the punch in at an angle then uses the internal plate to pry against to get his leverage.

The first time I tried it, like an idiot, I used an aluminum punch
and immediately heard a light snap. That was it for that punch.

After that I gave up and went back to my old method of pushing
them against the edge of a counter top to help compress the sides together.

Some day I'll give that "smith's" method another try because it looks
so quick & easy. The next time whatever I use will be steel.

I do have a Glock Mag Tool, but because I don't
have a third hand I need help when using that method.

Here's what works for me: Wrap a couple turns of electrical tape around the mag tube just above the base. Grasp the tube where you wraped the tape to protect the tube with channel locks. Push in the floor plate with a punch and tighten your grip on the channel locks just a bit so you can push the base back enough to release the locking lugs on the tube/base assm.. Put down the channel locks and put your thumb over the end of the tube to catch the spring and plate and push the base off. Reverse the procedure to reinstall base.

Some of them come right off while others you need a C-clamp and screwdriver...definitely not like a S&W mag-or HK for that matter.

If only it was that easy I suppose if it was removed a lot it would get easier.

jj-You might look into this little tool to help in removing that base plate. It's available for 45's as well. They can be a PITA.

I do the same thing, except I put the tape on the channel locks. The trick is to only squeeze a LITTLE, so as not to deform the metal inside the plastic cover of the magazine.

I have no idea WHY Glock magazines have those extra tabs on the base pads. They certainly aren't necessary.

They make a tool called a G-Tul that you slip over the body of the magazine. It squeezes the magazine enough to slide the floorplate off without damage. I believe it comes with a mag. brush.
