Gmail/Computer Question

OK, computer guys, here's another one for you... I saw a thread on a PC virus that is going around, so I question a banner that popped up on my Gmail this morning. It is a red banner that is just below the search window, and it reads:

"warning: we believe your account was recently accessed from: Hungary (broadband.hu:80.98.150.50). Show details and preferences | Ignore"

The last part is a link, but I did not click it. When I first log into my account the banner is a light tan, and it says:

"Thousands of online accounts are hijacked every day. Enable 2-Step verification to protect your account. Learn More Hide"

The "Enable 2-Step Verification," "Learn More," and "Hide" are also links that I did not click. The tan banner quickly turns to the red banner once I go into my inbox.

So, do you think this is from Google, or a scam...? Should I click the link on the warning banner. Based on what I've ever read about viruses, I'm not inclined to click on something without knowing for sure if it is legit... I'm my own IT guy, so I appreciate the folks that are experts at this stuff, as I am not!

sounds like a variation of the Misleading App viruses. Basically, a trojan or worm that will pretend to be a legitimate antimalware tool.

I'd recommend starting in safe mode and running your malwarebytes, adaware, kaspersky, AVG, norton, whatever you use just to make sure.

A dead giveaway is these things that pretend to be a real antivirus program will kill your legit antimalware tool when you try to run it and then hijack your browser.

I think if you were actually getting hacked/ something like that, mail would not let you log it without verification.
