I have not developed any desire to own a .460 or a .500, and I certainly have no need for one. However, I have no negative opinion of folks who do want one -- to each his own. But...

A year or so ago I watched a TV show where a professional hunter and a S&W rep went after Cape Buffalo with a .500. The whole episode was rather absurd. He put eight shots in to a big buff, chasing it all over kingdom come. While it's a bit hard to feel much sympathy with a critter that weighs a ton and can, and will, stomp you in to jelly given the chance, I cringed a bit at every shot. Once it was finally down, they did the obligatory pose with the trophy while extolling the big wheelgun as the ultimate powerhouse.

Really???...

Yo can go to youtube and find videos of hunters using big rifles and see the same thing... my point is a poor shooting can not be corrected by a large caliber... rifle or handgun.

be safe
Ruggy

Or a poor choice of bullets. Wrong Bullets, even with good placement.....still equals failure! memtb

Sounds like the dude couldn't shoot worth a damn or was just using an awful bullet, the .500 will do bad things to animals large and small very quickly.

Just got this home today. She is really a beast. It’s weighs 3# 11 oz per my kitchen scale. It’s 4 ounces more than my 4” 500 SW and a full # more than the Ruger Alaskan 454 Casull. I took a couple of better pics, the lady one is a group photo in descending g weight/size with my baby Chief brining up the rear.

Interesting what you can find on you tube.. anything you want to agree with your point of view.
The 460 XVR long tubes were developed specifically for hunting large game. The muzzle velocity of 2086Ft/Sec and energy if a 30” grain billet leaving an8”+ barrel is almost 3000 Ft-pounds. (2860) that is smack in the middle of many large caliber big game rifle cartridge specs. So whatever you watched I. You tube I suspect was intended to steer people away from S&Ws or hunting altogether.
Here is the data published for done large caliber rifles and the 460.

A few young surgeons should study
up on the fusion of wrist bones, elbow
bones, treatment of other lower arm
fractures.

They will have a certain amount of
specialist work in a few years when
the brave hearts shooting those
big handguns no longer have the
use of their hands or arms, at least
not without pain and awkwardness.

For now, have fun! :D:D:D

I do mostly 300 grain bullets in my 460's, once you learn how to manage the recoil they are not that bad. The kicker is that I will only shoot at most 50 460's in a range visit.

You have to know your limit,I can fire off seven mid range .500 loads a day and that's it as my hands tingle and start getting numb and I know any more is asking for problems.

Yes these handguns are a step above normal.

It is a cumulative bone degeneration..

Keep it up one and all. Have fun.

The surgeons will be waiting.

Somewhere in the USA, somebody is EDC that gun with full house 460 ammo.

I recently picked up a 500 S&W Magnum w/4" barrel for no other reason than I enjoy shooting big guns. After experimenting with the 700gr "T-Rex Thumpers" and some 500gr hardcast Grizzlies, I bought a box of 50 Hornady XTP's and a box of Hornady 300gr FTX and worked up some handloads.

As you can imagine, those 700gr rounds out of a 4" barrel wake you right up. After shooting a few rounds of the 500gr and 300gr rounds, the difference between all 3 are definitely noticeable. The 300gr FTX's are my new favorite... :D

2860 ft. lbs. against a Cape Buffalo when the absolute minimum rifle recommendation is a .375H&H putting out 4,311 ft. lbs. In South Africa, the .375 or larger is required by law with the 416 Rigby being preferred with 400 gr. bullets delivering 5,115 ft. lbs. Y'all think they were undergunned buy a tad maybe?

He must have been using the wrong ammo.

Energy matters. There's nothing I hate more in the "gun community" than the sissies complaining about using, "what you dont need." Sorry, but your 30-30 and 9mm really are weak rounds. I've never had a pig or deer run from my 300 win mag for a reason, and it wasn't "shot placement." The blood, gore, and incapacitation speak for themselves.
