going round the bend??

Tonight I was watching the news with my wife. When the news ended, I told my wife that I was a bit congested and was going to get some nasal spray.

I stood up and for about 10 seconds, I was lost! I didn't know which way to go, where I was, what I was going to do--- nada!

Do I have a problem? Am I going round the bend?

I am 82 and did have a stroke 5 years ago.

Nothing like this has ever occurred to me before.

I do admit to my thinking having slowed down a bit, but I'm still smarter than most.

You may have had a Temporary Ischemic Attack. Some call them mini-strokes. Make an appointment with you doctor to to be sure everything is okay.

You definitely want to get checked out.TIAs (if that’s what it was)can be followed by a stroke.The trick with these things is we often don’t recognize the symptoms in ourselves and those around us may not either. Since you already have a history,I’d make that call.

I've been out in my garage having a smoke, and think of something I needed to do when I went inside.

Walk into the kitchen from the garage and draw a complete blank.

This has happened for years, I'm 62 and don't think I've ever had a stroke.

I blame in on the great multitudes of Seconal, and Quaaludes I took in my younger years, and the mass quantities of Vodka I drank.

Maybe blood flow problem? Did you feel a little light headed when you stood? This has happened to me and I'm a relatively young fellow.
Try this test.
Go to a fast food place and order a breakfast sandwich.
Take with you one dollar bill, one quarter and three pennies. Tell us how it goes.

I ain't no doctor, but that doesn't sound like a doctor diagnosed, Mini stroke like I had.
Sounds like you should get checked out. They know more than we do.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one. My face felt weird and I couldn't whistle. My left leg and arm were 'sparkly'. Not serious, but it took a few years. I haven't had another.

It's been five years. One eyebrow still doesn't work as it should. Ecotrin and Lipitor are my friends.
Admittedly, my right hand isn't 100%. When I wake up in the morning, I put shoes on instead of slippers. I lose my balance. If I wear shoes, the rubber helps me grip better.

I had several Mini strokes before I went to the doc. Didn't know it at the time. Had a blocked artery [Cartroid]on right side of my neck. That was 8 years back. 5 years ago I had the same blockage only near my heart. Took 3 stents to clear that. Still have to wait when I stand before taking a step. Had a Pacemaker installed 1 1/2 years ago. Hang in there you guys, the best is yet to come.

I had 3 strokes 5 weeks ago and lost about 1/2 of my right side and some of my balance. One of the symptoms was not recognizing it as a stroke nor did those around me so I didn’t go to the hospital until 30 hours later.
A few years ago snowshoeing all day or hiking eight miles at 12,000’ wasn’t a big deal. Today,walking a mile is exhausting as is taking a shower without falling. What a change!

About 35 years ago, I had nasal surgery. As the docs were about to put me out, I complained about the background music. The Muzak was playing, "I'm climbing the stairway to Heaven!" Everybody got a good laugh out of it.

Some answers here are muddling the issue a bit.

There is a distinct difference in seriousness between lapses in short-term memory, and an apparent complete crash of situational awareness as described in your post.

If you walk into a room and have forgotten what you meant to do there, but you know which room you’re in and how to get back out, and who you are, and you are aware that you just forgot something, that’s pretty normal age-related forgetfulness.

But your events sounds more like you lost your place in the universe for those 10 seconds, and that can indeed have much more serious neurological causes.

So off to the doctor.
