Going to be a bad winter?

I don't know if Winter is going to be bad or not but I know it is just around the corner.

I snapped this photo last Saturday. Its coming, and down right soon.

We haven't had a "normal" winter in almost 20 years. They have all been extremely mild. A normal winter would be a welcome change and long over due.

Any problem with drought up there in Upstate NY ?
Years ago I read in one of my mother's women's magazine that "Buying your kid a sled for Christmas will sweep every snowflake from the sky for the next six weeks." So I have been going around buying up old Flexible Flyers, etc. Have several snow shovels, buy them when I see them at yard sales, etc. I look up snow shoveling as a workout. burns off calories, gives men an excuse to indulge myself with goodies. And having several snow shovels seems to have a talismanic effect, it wards off snow.

Well, down here, we prefer a bad winter compared to a bad summer. We've had a very mild summer. The grass is even still growing, it's usually brown and dead in early August. A bad winter means it snows a few inches about 3 times, and we might actually check our anti-freeze.

Nope we have had plenty or rain, that followed lot of snow earlier in the year.:(

I live on a large flood control reservoir and the water level has only slowly receded so far. Only had to move the docks out a few feet (about 25). Many years at this time we have moved them out 80 or more.

Where I live snow shovels are only for tune up work:D. We used truck plows or 4x4 tractors.(I have both) I have over a 1/4 mile long hilly driveway and a 30' x90' parking/turn around area to do.

All well and good, but are the Indians gathering extra firewood?:D

This Indian is. I'm not going to worry about running out like last year. I didn't run out but had to burn wood that was not ready. I'm heating two houses with a big boiler. (MIL)

Little Bear has been helping me a lot.

She warms my heart no matter what the weather

All the signs around here look like a repeat of last year

Round these parts we gauge the width of the stripe on ole wooley worm, the larger the stripe the worse the winter. Also go by the thickness of the fat on the rump of that harvested deer, the thicker the fat the worse the winter. The other thing is how high the pine squirrels build their nest, the higher up in the tree the worse the winter. Lately with the newfangled weather we go by the El Nino pattern, the more of an El Nino type winter we have the more moisture and usually warmer the winter...La Nina can be a cold hearted .... when she happens.

Some of the tree's are starting to turn here also, I don't think we had a day here above 77 this summer, most mornings have been somewhere from 55 to 61, we did have two days about a week ago that were down to 40 at about 6 AM and the fall run of stripers just started.

I've spent most of my life working outside in all kinds of weather. I'm getting old and joints and muscles react to bad weather. Last winter bout near killed me.
I retired in August. This winter I plan to look out the window and say "Dang, it sure looks cold out there!". ;)

According to the experts and the scientific community, I think they found that this year, so far, has been one of the very hottest on record. We are probably into advanced and irreversable global warming and the seas are already raising. Based upon that information, we are probably headed into a winter that will set new records for cold and length of cold weather.

It was 96, and heat factor of 105 in IL yesterday. Supposed to have a cool front come through today. I did see several of the large brown woolly worms last week, which is very early and one of the "old wives tales" for an indicator of a early and hard winter. My wife said she heard the Old Farmers Almanac has indicated a long cold winter also.

Who to believe? The Farmers Almanac or our own government?

On the third coast--Houston--the last two winters were most inhospitable.
We usually can play golf at Christmas in shorts---not the last two.
The summe has been mild this year---there has been a good amount of NW & NE breezes.
I am no forecaster and I am not saying Thus sayeth the Lord--but I am saying that you can count on not being warm too many days this winter--come september.
Blessings

winter..............hmmmmm I have a long pair of pants around here somewhere. We suffer the summers (pools, beaches ) to enjoy the winter (more golf, heated pools, shorts ),it works for me.

I don't care what it does. Yep, I checked the woodpile under the deck. I've got all the stuff from last summer still, and a little from the year before that. I don't really heat with the wood, I do have a fire every night. But then I do enjoy the fires a lot. And my youngest son tends to not bother about firewood because he can haul away Dad's.

Just to feel better, and for y'alls sake, I'll pull the snowblower out and start it. But not until October when I usually do it. I've found that firing it up and making sure it runs is a wise thing to do. Remember, I don't have to go out unless I want to. The worst thing would be my grandkids can't make it here. The best is they can't make it back home. :D

While most people break out the boots and heavy coats to deal with the winter weather I'll have to start wearing socks with my sandals. Thats ok as winter starts around 15 December and ends on or about January 2nd which is when we can start working on our tan.
