Going to New York this June-need ideas

My wife's relatives live on the Island and I used to work in the "City".
Once we get to LI we stay there. If you go to NYC...that is a great experience.
If you have a weekend for a wedding on the Island..stay our there. Plenty to do and see. I agree with Fat Tom.. put your foot down or tell them to go themselves while you explore..say.. Jones Beach in the summer!

I'm from Texas and would not want to live any where else but NYC is a great place to visit been there twice want to go back if you are a baseball fan go to Yankee stadium, the Intrepid museum is outstanding , have fun.

explore..say.. Jones Beach in the summer!

I think he'd like Jones Beach. Park in the easternmost lot(1?), leave momma at the blanket, and walk further east. Bring a good pair of shades.
What happens at Jones Beach stays at Jones Beach.

Speak to and make eye contact with everyone. Tell those around how glad you are to be there. Hold the door for young women wish them a good day. Smile. At least 5% of those folks will worry all day and talk about nothing else.

Leave your gun or guns at home. Even if you have a CCW permit in your home state, New York does not recognize any other states permits, they are very strict on this if you are found with a handgun.

Even NY CCW permit holder can't carry in NYC. I don't know how many people that where just passing through this miserable state ran afoul with the law because of their refusal to honor out of state permits.

NY is worth seeing

I would say that if we are going to NYC and have never been, go up a couple days early or stay a few days late, and see the city right. There are a LOT of MUCH better things to see and do in NY than hang around a TV studio for hours.

What you are describing sounds like ready made exhaustion and misery.

Go to Sagamore Hill, it's on Long Island.

This is actually a great suggestion! It would be a great way to spend a day in the area, without getting caught up in the madness of Manhattan.

Of course, for a first-time visit to New York, seeing Teddy Roosevelt's home is not nearly as cool as experiencing the Empire State Building...

Under no circumstances drive to Manhattan! Period. Actual drive there Thursday is doable but return on Friday afternoon will take several (like 3) hours. Not making this up! Add a summer shower and you will miss the rehearsal.

If your lovely bride insists on the driving trip to the city, may I suggest you fly on Wednesday and do the city on Thursday. Leave Friday morning. That would not be bad...save the parking $$$$ and drive aggravation.

You also might consider flying into BWI, train direct to Manhattan, tourist stuff there, train (LIRR) to Islip, and flight home from Islip.

This is a great idea here from one of my fellow Marylanders!

There is an Amtrak station adjacent to Baltimore-Washington International Airport. You could indeed fly into BWI, take the shuttle over to the Amtrak station, and then enjoy an easy 2-1/2 hour train ride into Penn Station in Manhattan. Spend a night or two there, then take the Long Island Railroad outbound to the wedding.

I don't know about Central Park unarmed. Maybe put one of them 20 foot Louisiana gators on a leash and walk it like a pet dog would keep the muggers away.

Central Park is safe and tranquil these days.

The New York City of the '60s and '70s is a memory. Manhattan is noisy, crowded, loud, flashy...but (generally) safe.

The Carnegie Deli is justly famous for its huge corned beef sandwiches. I have eaten there on many occasions, and while it's expensive, it's worth it...just don't order anything but a sandwich, as that alone will be enough.

Katz's Deli is also supposed to be very nice. (I have not eaten there, but my NYC friends like it. It is most famous, or notorious, for being the site where Meg Ryan faked the Big O for Billy Crystal in "When Harry Met Sally".)

My favorite New York deli is not in Manhattan, but in Merrick, Long Island, about 15 minutes east of JFK Airport...it's called the Pastrami King. They have got the best pastrami around, and their corned beef is as good as you'll find anywhere else. You can park easily, and prices are much lower than in Manhattan.
