Gold Box Protection

I finally got my first Gold Box thanks to smith17, who BTW is a great guy to deal with. TY Sir. I recently purchased period correct stocks for it too. Both were very hard to find. This brings me to my question, since I couldn’t find much info on antique cardboard preservation. What do you guys do to preserve, clean and/or repair your old boxes? I don’t want to do a “Bubba the Boxsmith” on this beautiful box. I’m really happy with the condition of it, so I’m mainly concerned in preserving it. TY for any info. Forgive me if I don’t answer right away, I need to start my Christmas Eve honey do list. Happy Holidays all.

Thats a great looking gun! I dont know the answer to your question on boxes but I had to comment on your picture.

renaissance wax is what museums etc use to not only preserve the metal and wood of your gun but the box as well...VERY good stuff

Much depends upon what kind of environment the box lives in.

First thing, I never store collectible guns in their equally collectible boxes. Bad for the guns, bad for the boxes.

Next, to prevent crushing, you can block the inside of the box with cardboard or balled up clean white paper.

Lastly, you could put the box in an airtight, zip lock bag that would still let you view the box, but would keep it from mold and moisture. The new vacuum bags are great for this as you can pump out most of the air... A moth ball in the corner of the bag away from the paper, will prevent silverfish and other paper eating critters from getting in or kill them off if they are already at it.

Then I just stack them up in the safe out of extremes of temperature or dampness and not in the direct sun. UV will fade the box.

I've never heard of anyone waxing boxes (no snickering CAJ or Sip) but I suppose that it could be done.
