for the K22 gold box about what SN did they begin the embossed S&W on the side and eliminate the flat gold framing around the Smith & Wesson K22 Masterpiece Target Revolver?? Thanks Bob

You might as well ask-
What day did man discover fire, and what time was it?
The guns were not built in serial number order, so that creates one problem.
The other problem is that I seriously doubt that all of the early box blanks were used up first, but rather wound up mingled with the newer style.

what Lee said, ,yes, there were overlaps, and I for one have never seen a "complete" collection of the K-22s, and all their packaging.........you couild 'ask' folks that have one or the other to "note" the serial numbers, and start to amass a data base of comparison of the two, LOTS of homework.....bottom line most likely a "cost savings" change (maybe even a vendor/supplier) change to a less costly version of the gold/blue boxes (post war to around the late 50's and yes, seen some even ship in the 60's...........) a "**** shoot"

I first ran into the difference years ago when trying to upgrade the box top for a 1947 K22. Since then, I have been watching and inquiring about every K22 gold box that comes up for sale.
As has been pointed out, it is unlikely that the break was "clean." However, it appears to me that by 1949 production, the early style boxes were gone for sure. I therefore conclude that the early boxes were used up in 1948.
Of course, I am a Colt guy so my information may not be reliable.
