Whatever happened to the dependable delivery of mail ? On Morning of Dec 1, which was first day of deer season, I had to mail a large check priority mail / tracking number, ect. This check is for a gun purchase and usually pay no attention unless seller is dragging his feet shipping. Our mail here in Podunk SE Ohio goes from our PO to Columbus, Ohio. Tracking shows the letter left our PO same day and arrived in Columbus same evening. Starting to wonder about status I checked on line. The wording was it was in route to next destination.
Little linear chart showed it still in Columbus. Thinking that can’t be right I took receipt to PO today and they checked. Sure enough it’s suppose to be in Columbus, which would be 10days with no movement. Or, Or I say it has been stolen or lost. My bet goes on stolen which will be gaslighted by USPS as lost.
I’m done sending anything important through the mail. Columbus is the Bermuda Triangle of mail. Any problems we have had and they are substantial are Columbus. Coming and going. Couple year back bought couple pistols off member from NW Pa. As crow flies less than 200
mile from Columbus. Between Columbus and our PO they vanished. Never to be seen again far as I know.
I must mention something hart warming. As much as the USPS is in the hole and raising rates for the holidays, there on the counter was a display with FREE Christmas Cards in case you forgot to buy your own. Further there is all kind of large boxes for rural delivery. These routes are run with Jeeps. Our PO is very small and these boxes were from floor to ceiling. I ask Post Master, I thought there was max size and weight for parcels. He told me that is True but the packages were from Amazon. It seems their contract with USPS allows them to send about anything they please. While I’m on waste, my wife and daughter are always buying stuff off eBay and such. Many times their parcel arrives padded with the bubble pack flat rate envelopes provided free by PO. WTH this sounds chicken poo but what is the cost across the country? PO has been running in the red for years.
They definitely need oversight. Musk should have ripped them a new one while he was investigating loss & fraud. The citizen pays top rates to subsidize accounts like eBay & Amazon. Someone should fire up the Pony Express and run USPS out of business.

I also live in Ohio and I've been rather annoyed with the Post Office lately myself. Over the last three months I've had three bills that I mailed vanish without a trace, had one returned to me with no notice (it had postage and a correct delivery address) and one got lost for a month and a half before finally getting delivered. Seems like they have really been dropping the ball.

I had a package from Optics Planet that got to Raleigh, NC last Wednesday. (this is the last "Hub" stop before it goes to my local PO) It then went to Queens, NY. The next day it was back in Raleigh. Later that day it was in Queens, NY again. Finally got back to Raleigh on Friday and was delivered later that day.

I don't believe it went from Raleigh to Queens twice, but that's what their so-called tracking said.

Its not like you can call and check on something as they don't answer the phone. I can't ask the local delivery person as he does not speak English (at least not well enough for me to understand).

I ordered a firearm that was sent USPS earlier this year. It was "out for delivery" so I went to the store. The "mailman" came and went while I was there and it was not delivered. Later that day I checked the on line tracking. It was listed as "attempted to deliver but no one was at the business at 5:00 PM. The mailman was there at 2:30 and did not deliver it. The shop closed at 6 PM and no one from the USPS came back that day. I tried to file a complaint for the employee blatantly lying and was instructed to complete the complaint on line. I found the complaint forms and spent 30 minutes filling them out only to have the system to say that the complaint form was not working and no complaint was ever sent.

They have proven to be incompetent with no way to let them know how incompetent they are.

I have read of a few USPS hubs that seem to be black holes or Bermuda Triangles.
A couple of years ago I ordered something or other from a business in an adjoining state and it was to be shipped UPS. To make a long story short the thing bounced back and forth like the steel ball in a pinball machine between 5 states before I finally got it 3 weeks later.
I could have traveled the straight-line shipping distance involved riding my lawnmower in much less time than that.

Sorry in advance for this rant....

I found out late last year (2024) that our local mail is collected and taken by trucks 200+ miles away to Louisville to be sorted and postmarked, then trucked back to Evansville for distribution.
This "strategy" was implemented in 2023 as a cost cutting and efficiency move for cryin out loud. This is apparently being done across the country to "save money".

Meanwhile, phones go unanswered, and letters and packages are lost, or endlessly and recklessly re-routed.

Along with losing our mail, the USPS lost over 9 Billion dollars in 2024.

My question when I hear of this is, why is this incompetence tolerated? The people charged with oversight of this wasteful USPS debacle should be fired and replaced.

As a retired Postal Servive employee, I’ll never forget get my postmaster coming to me early one morning and saying “ I need you to run up to Richmond and look for a dead guy”. Turns ou I was looking for cremains for a person whose funeral was the following day. It was sent Registered Mail, so tracking it “ shouldn’t “ have been a problem. So my assistant and I made the 2 hour ride to the Richmond sorting facility. It’s a big place. After several hours of looking through all the packages, and it was a lot, we finally found it on a shelf with stuff with damaged barcodes that couldn’t be read automatically, so we got him to his funeral on time.

That was the Sandsron distribution center that has been documented the worst in the nation ! Dowd the road from there is Charles City PO which has not delivered mail to one route for 7 days and counting .

You do realize this is the busiest time of year, right?

USPS is a SERVICE, not a RIGHT.

I know the local postmaster and she is one beautiful young woman with a bright future ahead of her. Have NEVER had a problem with the post office here.

USPS delivers 25 MILLION parcels PER DAY.

What you don’t here about is the 99.99% of packages that get delivered right on time.

The internet has a way of blowing up issues and giving a false sense of a problem when in fact, there is none.

- 9 billion plus for years, and the service sucks..........

Musk should have ripped them a new one while he was investigating loss & fraud.
He actually should have looked in his own pockets!

To me there is no private delivery service any better than the USPS, they all have their problems, be it Fedex, UPS, or any others. With the major switch to online purchasing rather than local it has exploded exponentially the possibility of issues. With differing regional management and supervisory styles, natural events, the lack of personnel, it is a wonder any of them can function at all.
We had a great local postal service and then the long term Postmaster retired, a decent one came in but only temporary, and then a totally incompetent replacement arrived with a "my way or the highway " attitude that screwed up decades of good service in a month.

When have a black hole hub in Gastonia NC. When tracking if it goes to Gastonia, it will sit there a couple of days and then it may goin any direction. One of the Counter folks at our local post office told me "The workers in Gastonia are not happy"

Me thinks I smell a postal worker. The little post offices across the land are operated by mostly local people and are very dependable. The big distribution centers are where the problems occur. Like most problems they originate from urban centers where govt jobs are handed out to no goods.

For several weeks I have been "away from home" working as a care giver.
I am having the local newspaper mailed to me,
the great distance of 18 miles.

Today I receive last weeks Thursday paper.

The one week to travel 18 miles is typical for my newspaper.

Update that this was posted on a Thursday.

All 3 carriers have been inconsistent the past several weeks. I don't remember exactly who was which but I've had 2 packages a week late, 2 or 3 either on time or a couple days late. And one 4 days early, and another 2 days early. A coffee subscription ship from Amazon has not shipped, don't have a date. I had to get my coffee from Walmart.
All of my regular bills are on auto pay so I don't have to worry about a check getting lost or taking the grand tour.

I feel your pain. Just when you thought it could not get worse, be thankful that you have not had to deal with Jacksonville, FL.
Would you believe my check has to go through Columbus, Ohio and eventually have to go through Jacksonville if that’s distribution point for Tampa area.

Ours goes 100 miles south to Phoenix then back again. If you mail friday it wont post until Monday.🤪

Indianapolis Indiana USPS sorting facility is a Bermuda black hole also
Make me want to start thinking about electronic type payment
I own a insurance agency and I talk to people several times a week that mailed their auto payment weeks ahead of time and it has not shown up at the company. That is using the companies payment envelope to send it. In that case they are driving around without coverage until and unless the check shows up at the company and the company will still reinstate the policy past the due date. I advise my clients to pay online. They can call us and we can do it for them or they can come by my office and pay us if they want to if they don't want to do it on their own. The problem is if the check has not showed up and then they pay it online and then the check shows up they end up with a double payment and don't get a refund until the check clears. Many times those payments are well over a thousand dollars. It makes for a real mess. The only other thing is to have the bank stop payment and then the bank charges them.

I can mail a letter from Gainesville Florida 100 miles South of Jacksonville to a town 20 miles away and it goes to Jacksonville and then back before it gets delivered.

Because the rapid deterioration at all levels of the USPS it makes me wonder if this is being done on purpose. By undermining the ability of the Postal Service to make it under perform. For a long period of time it has been told to us how much money they lose every year, my problem with that is they are a service that has no real competition who else could deliver a First Class mail 2500 miles away in seventy two hours. They are not in the business to make money but rather provide a service a form of communication. Middle Class Americans work at the post office, they spend money in America, when you compare the amount of money this Country donates to foreign countries can we really sit back and complain about loosing money on what at one time was the worlds best most efficient mail service? Maybe you complainers would rather fund a “Somali Learing Center” instead. By allowing this continued destruction of the USPS we are effectively taking another step towards becoming a third world country more unnecessary chaos, when essentially technology could increase efficiency we have been lead like sheep to allow the mail system implode ( tracking mail and its travels prove this). Think what is happening at the post office has a far greater impact than realized. How many eventually say screw it I will just pay my bills online, without realizing this is another step towards that cashless society. Ya I know many of you are about to tell me the advantage of using plastic because they give you XY&Z, remember back in the day we use to give blankets filled with smallpox to the locals. After being brainwashed on how wasteful the USPS is we complain about how incompetent they have become, how do we change for the better when it comes to dealing with today’s post office problems?

There were a lot more white and Indians killed by smallpox thru casual and sexual contact than from contaminated blankets.
As for the USPS, they have largely brought their problems on themselves thru EEO and DEI hiring preferences, lowering standards for applicants, and their unions making it almost impossible to fire bad employees.
Government employees should have never been allowed to unionize. It leads to an unholy alliance between union leaders and politicians. “You vote for me and I will get legislation passed to give you pay raises and job security”.
Even FDR was adamant against government employees being unionized.
