Good Trade?

Came across a local trade.

His 649-3 for my 65-3 3" - even swap.

Assuming equal condition and equal amount of accessories going with each gun, am I doing something foolish here?

The stainless J-frame is still being produced, albeit with MIM parts and stupid internal locks.
Whereas the K-frame is no more and the L frame that replaced it just isn't the same (not that there's anything wrong with an L-frame).

He really wants something different and I was looking for a good deal on a 649-3 when I found my 65-3.

Thoughts on the subject?

You did well. Now for some Green sight paint for the front sight, A set of Checkered Rosewood finger groove Combats, and a Lobo Enhanced Pancake holster with Inner Hammer Shield.

You now have very close to the Ultimate Concealed Carry Revolver. The 3" K Frame 65 Round Butt, is the most shootable concealed carry revolver available at an affordable price. I find the 2-1/2" and 3" K Frames to be on the upper end of concealed carry revolvers size wise. I also carry 4" K, L & N Frames, the extra Inch of Barrel does make a difference carrying concealed, as does the grips. The 3" is a better choice than the 2" & 2-1/2" guns due to the Full Length Ejector Rod. Positive ejection might save your bacon doing a Tactical Reload some day.

I routinely carry auto's as my primary while at work, but I've always wanted a stainless J-frame for IWB/Discreet carry while in street clothes.
I can easily conceal the 65-3, but its JUST NOT A J FRAME (if you know what I mean).
Not too worried about the short ejector rod - the fastest reload is another gun.
When my 65-3 is strapped on as a primary I always carry my NAA Pug 22mag as a backup.

Two is just enough - one is none.

I believe you got it backwards. I think he's getting the 649 for his 65 3". Bad trade, in my opinion, but that's me. I'd much rather have the model 65. Except for pocket carry, it conceals as well as the 649, and has an additonal round. Again, that's just me!

Wow! As hard as it is to find a 3" 65 and you would trade it for a J-frame!!!??? Don't do it. Nothing but regrets.

If it were up to me I would hold onto your 3" Model 65-3 and look for a Model 649-3 to buy outright. The 3" Model 65 is a highly coveted revolver that is desired by many S&W revolver enthusiasts... myself included. Thankfully I already own one.

I like both the 649-3 and the 65. I would keep the 65 and buy the 649-3.

The 3" Model 65 is more valuable as it is more desireable by more people (and for good reason). This is simple supply/demand economics. You do, however, have more of a NEED for the j-frame right now.
-Plan A: keep your 65 and buy a J-frame at the next gunshow (or outright from your friend)
-Plan B: swap, but he kicks in $100.

I'd like to have both of them. I have a three inch nickel Model 13, and that size k frame really IS a great gun. Problem is, it's SO nice that I'm afraid of damaging the finish carrying it. I used to have a 65 like yours, and I regret getting rid of it every day. BUT, that 649-3 is one sweet small gun; my 642-1 gets carried more than anything I own, but in a blue jean pocket, the 649 weight increase would never be noticed. Tough choice, but it all comes down to your needs. I'd say keep the 65, and save up for a 649.

IMO, keep the 65. More versatile, easier to shoot well, carries great.

Thanks to everyone that chimed in.
I had already agreed to a deal with R1W for the 649-3 before I posted my query.
Met with him today and brought the 649-3 home with me.
Fit and finish on the 649-3 is MUCH better than the 65-3 I traded him.
Not that there was anything at all wrong with the 65, it just had more wear and tear than the 649.
It has been cleaned, loaded with Speer Gold Dot SB, and holstered - ready to hit the range tomorrow.
If the 649-3 shoots as well as it looks it will earn a permanent spot in the safe.
