A friend of mine named Paul was part of the greatest generation . He served in the Navy in WWII on the destroyer SS Anthony and on the liberty ship SS Ugat. after the war he came back home to the family dairy farm.
They got rid of the cows and planted apples and peaches . They had a little farm store that Paul ran till a few days before Christmas when he fell and broke his hip. He passed yesterday at just over 93. I'll miss him as we had breakfast together on the weekends.

I just had lunch yesterday with one from that generation. He’s a real treasure. He complained a bit about unsteadiness on his feet. Not what one wants to hear, but for now, he’s still driving and still plenty sharp. We are losing those fellows all too fast. I’m sorry to learn of the passing of your friend.

These men like Paul did the things those of my generation learned about in history books. We watch the old documentaries on television, but I often have my doubts that we really understand or comprehend what these men went through and what they accomplished.

It's sad to see the Old Guard pass away. I think we can take some small comfort in the fact that a lot of us are here today because of what men like your friend Paul did over seventy years ago.

Sincerest condolences on the loss of your friend. I'm sure you will continue to honor his memory.

My condolences on the loss of your dear friend.

I'm not trying to give you a hard time or anything, but you might want to consider editing the title of your thread to "Goodbye, Paul", instead of the current title.

Regards,

Dave

Not a problem:o Thanks for the heads up Dave;)

Those of the greatest generation were unique and very special people that are passing all to fast. Sorry for your loss and may he rest in peace .

Condolences on the loss of your friend. We are loosing our history with the passing of that generation. Both my Dad, may he rest in peace, and my Father-in-Law served in WW2. Without all of them where would we be today. (Would we even be today.)

R.I.P. Paul. The Greatest Generation is slowly fading into memory.
Sorry for your loss.

My condolences for the loss of your friend.
I was born in 1960. Growing up the vast majority of adult males had served in WWII. So. Fla. was a prime destination for vets returning and starting a family.
I didn't realize this when I was young. All I saw was a bunch of no nonsense fellows who if I stayed on their good side would be happy to share their knowledge and skills. One of my lasting regrets was not taking full advantage of the times and getting to appreciate who these men truly were about.
My father served stateside, his brother died in the Ardennes. My wife's dad was in Italy, one of his brothers was in Pearl, three others in Europe.
These were fine folks, all great in their way and they will be missed.
I'm glad you made a friend from that time and hope the benefits will be yours for years.

So sorry for your loss Bob. These great folks from a past generation that did so much to save our world from destruction are all too rapidly vanishing and we all mark their passing with sadness.
