Well, I haven’t even had a chance to shoot my Ruger Security Six yet. And it doesn’t look like I will get to. Just worked out a trade (pending) for a birth year (1965) Colt Trooper. Trading the SS, a Cattaraugus and two other knives for the Colt. I’ve not seen the Colt yet. The gentleman who has it said that his dad bought it new. The guy who now has it is 80. Figure I will be able to replace the Security Six much easier than I could a Colt.

I hope you like your Trooper as much as I like mine. I have a 1968 Trooper .357 with a 6" barrel (aka "poor man's Python".) I bought it so I could speak with some experience on the various facets of Colt vs Smith & Wesson and not just spout off all the repeated clichés ( them Colts stack hard in DA, them Colts go out of time you know, etc.) Most of the people spouting off those things on this and other various internet forums have never even fired a Colt.

I must say I enjoy it. I already have it packed up for my range trip tomorrow!

The Security-Six is an excellent revolver...very strong and more or less took the police market away from S&W to a large degree.

That being said...it did suffer from some of the same maladies the S&W K-frame did when fed a steady diet of magnums...particularly the hot 125 grain magnums.

Still...the Colt Trooper is an excellent revolver in its own right.

A shame to see a Ruger go, but the Trooper is a nice gun too. I have yet to own an example of the latter (and my preference would be a blued, 4" MKIII model), but I love my Ruger Police Service Six.

I have had my Ruger Security Six (and Blackhawk, and Single Six, and Redhawk, etc, etc.) going back to 1971.

My first S&W was bought in 1995. I now have a dozen more.

My only Colt (other than a 1911) lasted in my collection for only about 2 years.

My Security Six will go with me to the Nursing Home. No way would it be traded, unless the option was a Bentley.

I still have them all.

There’s no doubt that the Security Six is a robust gun. I actually had it advertised. Wanted to trade it for a fixed sight Service Six. The guy that has the Colt had contacted me about some knives I had for sale. He asked if that was me who had the Security Six listed. I answered yes, and he mentioned his Colt. His getting my Security Six and three knives for the Colt.

My mind went to singing that to 'The Sounds of Silence'. I think I need to shoot more.

I like these grips but would like to try something with an open front strap. Which other Colt grips fit the Trooper?

Any E/I frame Colt stocks will fit...that includes the Python, Official Police, Officers Model Match...original Trooper, new generation Anaconda, etc. There are a very few exceptions such as the uncommon round butt Official Police.

Thanks! That’s what I was thinking but wanted to be sure!

Nice one, OP. Ruger and Colt both make fine wheel guns imo.

Colt before Ruger

I’d definitely take a Colt before a Ruger. I
congratulate you on the trade off.

Yesterday I went one of my favorite local gun
shops. We got talk’n Lipsey’s and allocations.
They surprised me, several John Taffin’s Perfect
Pack’n Pistol on hand.

I’ve wanted my first purchase of a Big Bore
Ruger in 45 Colt for a long time.

One was enough, what an eye sore. What is
up with those grips. Fit was terrible and felt
like holding a somewhat sculptured 2x4.

Metal fit and finish appeared really nice.
I didn’t give it my detailed S&W inspection,
but I couldn’t complain, nothing was glaring
wrong.

It’s definitely coming off my “To Buy List”.
The “Won’t buy list” has a lot on it, so I won’t
bore you to death.

Go for the Colt always! A little more cost but better.
