Got a Beagle

Well it's been a few years sense I had to put my Beagle Sammy down.
Today we got Brady a Beagle that my wife's niece had .
He is the same age Sammy would of been about 12 years old.
My niece and husband are moving back to Germany for 3-5 years and could not take Brady with them.

Brady has already settled in as he has stayed with us several times over the years.
Sammie is on the left and Brady on the right.

Good lookin' hounds. How can anyone not love a beagle?? I used to raise them a few years back. My last one lived a tad over 14 years. I still miss that little sucker. I never came across a mean beagle.

Many years ago I got to hunt behind my uncle Richard's beagle. She would not only track rabbits but when Uncle Richard bagged a rabbit she would retrieve the rabbit and bring it back to him. She soaked up attention from my younger cousins like a sponge. She passed on a long time ago, but I still think of the days hunting with her and my uncle, dad and granddad.

My first dog was beagle and I named him Spot. He was a legend in Burnetta Kentucky, just a natural rabbit dog.

Glad Brady has a good, familiar home.

After losing our two boys....a Rat terrier (16 years)...and a border collie (a rescue...vet thinks he was 12-14)...wife and I could not bring ourselves to have another dog....being retired.

Then a face...and an attitude...changed our minds...our new four legged child.....Milly.....has taken over the house....she is a "Jug"....momma was a Jack Russell...papa was a Pug....

My first dog was a cocker/beagle mix. She lived to be 16.

I had beagles and raised them for a number of years. Ain't nothing cuter than a beagle puppy.

A funny story Sammie liked riding in my truck. One day I went to the Pets are Us store.
Sammie was in the truck and I was in the store a guy came up to me and asked me you must be the one that own's the Beagle. I told him yes. We had a long talk and he told me he belonged to a Beagle hunt club and that he bred them.
He also wanted to know if Sammie was fixed and if I ever wanted to breed him to call him.

Eric Sammie's only bad trait was he was very territorial.
He would go ballistic in our front bay window when people would walk by our house with there dog's.
I'd make him go to his kennel he would get so worked up that when I'd go to close the door on the kennel he would try to bite my fingers.

I love Beagles, I couldnt tell you how many I had over the years, myself and two friends used to raise them for hunting and field trail's, at one time we had 60 including puppies. [emoji1]

Just east of the little town that I was raised in, on the north side of the railroad tracks there was a huge brier thicket. I can remember standing on the tracks with my LeFever 20 double and popping the rabbits as Lulu Belle chased them out. Instead of running in the low place on each side of the tracks they would usually cross the tracks heading for the field on the other side.

We went visit my Bro in law last weekend.......

... and they had broken down and made trip to the pound on a recommendation from somebody. They picked a winner. Busby is a puppy so they get to raise him the way they want and he is responding well. Trouble is he's so small even if you shuffle your feet you are bound to step on him and they are afraid of the hawk that hangs around the back yard.

One Beagle I had back in the late 60's, his name was Windy, he was one hell of a gun dog, he was a little too mouthy for field trials, he used to drive rabbits in his sleep. [emoji1]

My maternal grandfather used to raise beagles.
I wanted one, but we ended up adopting a rescue.
I've read that if Harry Houdini came back as a dog he'd be a beagle.
They're known for being real escape artists...

My buddy in TN loves his Beagles. There always was a Beagle named Bo in his house. Five for sure.

Glad the OP is getting some time with Brady. The comments bring back a lot of good childhood memories. We had several beagles when I was a kid and we shot a lot of rabbits, pheasants and quail those dogs put up. The best one we had was beagle basset mix named Toby. He very rarely lost a trail and was nice and slow on the chase. The rabbits would get way out in front of him and just come loping by presenting an easy headshot. We did the same thing Ancient one mentioned about the RR tracks. We would park at a crossing, and hunt down and back. Dad would be up top and I would be down walking the bottom field edges, When we came to a woods or a nice thick treed fence line we would hunt it up one side and back down the other field edge. Been a long time since I thought about those dogs and holiday hunts. Thanks for the reminder.
