picked up a new 642 today at the tulsa gun show.I guess it would be the base model for this model, other than grips to soften the recoil and get better grip(does this have a bad recoil?) is there other things you can do to this gun to make it better or more user friendly? this is going to be my main conceal gun and I like the trigger pull. mag-na-port?cost? any idea's? I really like this gun so far and can't wait to shoot it. I did alot of research and had narrowed it down to the 642 and the lcr in my price range. i think i made the right choice. thanks in advance.....

you got a good gun. Recoil isn't bad, although you can tell when you shoot +P ammo. Hogue makes a grip that covers the backstrap and gives you a place to put your pinky that is quite soft although it's quite a bit larger than the stock grips. It all depends on how you're going to carry it as to whether or not it will matter. I carry my 638 in my pocket so I left the factory grips on it.

thanks

i kinda like the size of the factory grips, but would like to find something a little more user friendly and covering the back strap kinda like the lcr ruger puts out, those grips didn't feel bad in the hand, but I like the s&w gun better.

I was also torn on which to get when I first started to look for a CC weapon. I was on the verge of getting the LCR..in fact went down to my gunshop after he called and said he had one in. He also got in a 642 in the same shipment..he hadn't had one in a long time..I liked the 642 a ton more. Pocket carry it everyday with factory grips in a Desantis holster. I cast and reload my own so recoil is not a issue unless I use the +p SD load. Even then very managable. Have fun shooting it!

Great gun. I love mine. The trigger will smooth out after a few trips to the range. I found recoil only to be an issue with the high end +P loads with 158g bullets. I too carry front pocket and prefer the factory grips.

642

I don't want to sound bias but I have 4 the wife.daughter ,son, and myself, great gun.I load my own and I keep it in the .38 special range just to keep the recoil down for the girls(I like it to)just for the second shot if ever needed.

I have an older model 642 without the IL or MIM parts. The trigger pull smoothed out very nicely after about 500 rounds went down the tube. I bought a cylinder from a 442 that had been modified by TK Custom for moon clips from another forum member that I installed for my first pinto gun. I like having the option to either load using a speedloader, speed strip, or moon clip. I installed a set of LaserMax J laser grips and it makes a very nice concealed carry piece. I carry in my front pants pocket and use a #3 Uncle Mike's pocket holster for it. I'd include pictures but I don't have access to the other computer right now. I really like this little gun, and I think you'll enjoy yours as well.

Best of luck,

Dave

thanks for the responses

thanks all, I am looking forward to shooting, carring(once app is turned in(2/16/10)and approved, and maybe doing some adding to for that personal touch.

has anyone done anything to there 642 besides grips?

ammo?

also I bought some monarch 158 gr. semi-jacketed hollow point for it(that is all they had).
(1) how is that for shooting?

(2) what would you recommend for practice?

(3) what about conceal?

I think you'll like your 642. I've had mine for over a dozen years, keep it loaded with 158 grn LSWCHP +Ps. I left stock rubber grips on it, but if I carried it more than I do would probably put on wood Eagle Secret Services grips because rubber ones tend to "grab" my clothes and hang up, with wood it just slides off. This is what I have on my 640-1 .357 mag.
The only thing I have done to the 642 is install a "Clip Draw" on the right side. It's a metal clip that screws right to the frame and allows you to just tuck it in waistband without a holster. With a revolver this light it works great, especially if you're in a hurry.

My daily carry is the 642. I use a Mika pocket holster in my right front.

I have rather large hands so chose Crimson Trace laser grips - I bought the ones that cover the backstrap AND extend below the grip frame. I have no problem with concealment and no interference in my pocket. The grip is #305.

I carry the FBI load (158 gr Hollow point +P) and have no problem with control with the CT grips.

I am extremely happy with my choice of revolver AND grip.

I practice with 148 gr dbl ended W/C's loaded by me with 3.5 grs of Bullseye (full load). I seat the front band out of the case to help line up in the cylinder throats.
