Looked at a S&W K frame 22 this morning. It is a 6" probably in the 70%.

When opening the cylinder where the model number should be is the letter S and below it is 13653. The yoke has a different number.

Serial number on butt and bottom of barrel is K 2518XX which I think puts it at about 1955. Cylinder has matching SN.

Grips have the screw going thru the diamond (grips kind of rough) It is a shooter and not a safe queen

My question is, Is this a model 17 and do you think it is worth the $325.00 the guy wants for it? Sorry no picture.
thanks

It is what would become the Model 17 after 1957 . . . in it's present form would be considered a K-22 Masterpiece . . . and yes, if in mechanically sound condition, would be worth at least $325.

Hope you're successful in landing it . . .

K251xxx would indicate shipment around early 1956, thus before model numbering started later in the 1950s. It is a K-22 Masterpiece, not a Model 17. Assuming no mechanical problems, it would be worth $325 any day as a shooter.

I would say a shooter grade, honest, not refinished K-22 Masterpiece (pre 17) at $325 is a good enough buy these days it should already be in your safe and not still at the dealers.

Allen,

Yes buy it at that price.

S is and inspec/assembler Stamp and the # below it, 13653, is an assembly #.
What is the # on yoke opposite S

They should match. To know if that's the original yoke for the gun, look for the serial # on the rear face of the yoke looking thru one of the chambers.

The rear face of the yoke supports the same SN as barrel and butt grip, not the 13653 number
I did bring it home and also found it to be a 5 screw and it cleaned up pretty decently. Has a ding on bottom of barrel about 2" down from end of barrel. Other than that not to bad.

Good!

And the # on yoke opposite S

All 4 pieces support the same SN#, frame, barrel yoke & cylinder.
The number on the yoke is the same number of that below the S inspec/assembler Stamp number. So is this a K-22 Masterpiece or a K-22 Combat Masterpiece

6" barrel = Masterpiece
4" barrel = Combat Masterpiece

Those pix look a lot nicer than 70% to me. I would say you did quite well on this deal. The only evaluation that I would suggest you perform (that hasn't already been mentioned) is specific to the rimfire revolvers... look at the edges of the chambers to see whether there has been any peening due to dry firing on empty chambers. If you want to dry fire (for function or practice) it is a good idea to place fired cases in each chamber to prevent this. All in all, I'd say congratulations are in order!
