Got hit with the Dawn dish soap scam

How does the Dawn dish soap fit into the scam? Not that it needs to make sense…
These two were not the sharpest knives in the drawer, but idiots that do these things imagine they are smarter than their potential victims. Why she thought having the bottle of Dawn in her hand would give her an upper hand is beyond me. She likely saw similar acts on the internet and thought it would work, some how. You can't fix stupid.

Several scams that I noticed lately. Couple pull up in my driveway. Guy gets out and introduces himself saying he was opening Kirby vacuum center in town and was getting that information out into the neighborhood. We live 15 miles from town so I suspected something right away. Driving around talking to people who live in the country isn't cost effective advertising. He ask if he could demo a vacuum and I said we already have one that works fine. Yeah but this one will work better on your carpet. I said we don't have any carpets, all hardwood. Asking too many personal questions and questions about the neighbors will always get my attention and he was asking a lot of those. Sent the guy on his way and wished him well in his new business. :(

Wife just got a text saying she had a bill from our hospital and she could pay that using the link. I checked our billing with the hospital website and nada. Total scam.

Same thing happens with texts from the DOT  for tolls on a local freeway. I never use that freeway so pretty easy to know those are scams.

I try to be nice to people but it's becoming harder everyday.

I had two gangbanger types(looks like and quacks like……come duck season see below) come up on my porch about 3 am. Dog woke me up….whoosagoodgiiirrrl! I opened the front door on them 1911 45 in hand behind my back! They stammered a bit said they were looking for somebody and gave a name that I knew didn’t live in our rural area. I then noted a car darker out at the end of my 50 yard drive. It was running and had a driver inside! I then moved the 1911, a Wilson CQB, to my front and advised them they need to look elsewhere or they would find St Peter and a locked gate! I called the SO, I worked there for near on 30 years……being the “ new kindler” type of Deputy’s they pretty much blew it off!

PS I alerted my neighbors….all well armed….and never met with the “ducks” again! Now I have beehives for my first line, dog for second and 1911 45 as the last line…..well I have my 629, Nighthawk Commander and Remington 870 12 riot Gun( amazing how many short 00 buck rounds you can load in it) at the ready! I also have gas and flash bang grenades! I know, I know overkill……but I’m not one to need what I need and not have it when I need it!

Remember one is none, two is one….etc, etc!

No community is safe. If a threat hasn’t appeared, it soon will. Our local LEO’s are intolerant but that doesn’t stop people from testing them now and then.

The “Dawn Dish Soap Scam” has been around for a while, more and more of the door-to-door ones are slowly fading away as more and more homes have security or doorbell cameras.

Here are few things that I have learned in my 25 years in Law Enforcement.

  • States have trespassing laws that make it illegal for anyone to walk onto “posted property” regardless if they’ve been told previously to leave and not return.
  • “No Soliciting” signs are as unenforceable as “ this neighborhood is private property” statements made by uninformed residents. If there is no gate to your subdivision controlling access, it is open to the public. “No Trespassing” signs typically fulfill statute for criminal charges, research and be knowledgeable of your state and local laws. I live and work in NC and that is where my information is based off of.
  • Most counties and municipalities are enacting or have enacted ordinances that are so vague that the are not enforceable and possibly unconstitutional and the DA’s will not prosecute leading to “cops aren’t doing anything” statements by people not realizing that their first stop is local politicians as guaranteed by the 1st Amendment and then the ballot box if that doesn’t work. DA’s, Commissioners and Alderman are elected and should be held accountable.
  • Almost all if not all people walking in your neighborhood wearing shirts with a business logo such as Vivint or ADT are who they say they are and can and will produce identification if requested per their company policy and are mainly young inexperienced “useful idiots” hired by these companies due to there being an endless supply of them unfortunately, we all had to start somewhere and its not years ago when cutting grass and manual labor were available.
  • These “useful idiots” are not casing your house and there are not packs of roving marauders looking for “insured by Smith& Wesson” signs to steal your guns and send them off to the rebels in “ insert name of generic 3rd world country here” . Folks they’re lazy, if someone is in your area “casing” they are looking for your neighbors who think that deadbolts work, cameras are expensive, and the cops will be here in minutes to break in grab what they can and be gone quickly.
  • Most citizens are not well versed on their state laws and local ordinances and operate under the “ a cop once told me” or “my friend is a retired chief or sheriff” theory not realizing or understanding that laws change or are amended or struck down years after their “friends” have retired, left office or got out of the profession and that those of us who are still active receive yearly legal updates and may be more well versed.
  • Law Enforcement cannot detain anyone for walking in a neighborhood for “acting suspicious” they have to articulate reasonable suspicion that “criminal activity is afoot”. Walking in a neighborhood wearing an ADT shirt is not suspicious, we can engage them in conversation, and they are free to walk away without saying a word.
  • Be careful, don’t be scared, trust but verify, watch out for your neighbors and ask them to do the same for you. This is how we win, in my opinion and in the 25 years I’ve been in LE the thing that I see more than anything else is that neighbors are no longer neighborly, it’s been that what for years and this is what begins the decline of neighborhoods. I grew up in a small town in a state “West of Virginia” and remember people driving by and honking at my family as we sat on the front porch visiting with each other, we always knew the people honking. Another breakdown is that people don’t sit on porches that much nowadays.
Happy Mother’s Day to all of the moms

How does the Dawn dish soap fit into the scam? Not that it needs to make sense…
They use it as a reason to be there and to see if anyone is home or answers the door. They make note of times, what they see, cameras, and ease of breaking in. If they get inside your house they rapidly determine the odds of items worth coming back for. If distracted, especially if more than one suspect is with them, you might later find items missing.

The last one we had here was a couple of years ago, same Dawn scam. He was polite as was I. He now knows not to come back and to tell the rest he was working with the same. Never took my hand off the 9mm in my pocket and he took notice of that which told me he had some prior experience. I called the SO and some of the neighbors. Quiet community here and things like this are not tolerated well.

I was sitting on my front porch when a small white Toyota pulled up in front of my mail box for a few seconds then pulled into my driveway. A young girl, about 19 or so, gets out of the passenger side and starts up the walk way, babbling as she came up the steps. She walked right up to me holding a large bottle of Dawn. She said I didn't have to buy any thing but if I let her vacuum my carpet or clean something she will get $25 towards her scholarship. I politely declined her BS offer but she was very persistent and said she could come back Tuesday or Wednesday. (trying to determine when I might not be home?) Told her if she came back she would be wasting her time because the answer would be the same. NO! The continued her disjointed pitch but finally gave up and went back to the car. Then the driver got out and walked up the steps and up to where I was sitting. He wanted to go into the house to vacuum the carpet too Who vacuums your carpet he asked. Answer, my wife and I. Oh, your wife lives here too? I'm smelling a rat and it stinks. He finally gives up and they drive out of my cul de sac without stopping at any other houses.

I told my wife about it and she does an internet search on the subject. To our surprise, the Dawn dish soap scam is all over the country, with a few minor variations. They want to get inside your house to case the joint, simple as that. These two were not convincing at all. In fact I could tell they were both blowing smoke from the start. For a moment I thought about shifting my seating position to reveal the little 317 in my right pocket but decided against it.

This used to be a quiet neighborhood but the crazies are are creeping up on us.
Maybe you should wear some bright yellow Cheetos pants while sitting on your front porch. You know, like Mother Nature does with highly deadly creatures that are brightly colored.
