Got Horrible Service. So Why Do I Feel Bad Ranting?

There are two well known and popular fast food places within a mile of my house. I actually like the food there.
However, I don't go to either one because they just can't ever get an order right.

And these idiots want $15 an hour?

I used to be an outward A-hole but have worked hard to be an inner one the past several years.
Have gone through some stuff and have tried to understand what really is important and how most things that were upsetting me weren't.
.

Sincere props for the introspection, few can, and those that do are always better for it.
Best advice I ever received was from a man who had been through hell and back, and never lost his positive attitude..."The only thing in life you can control is your reaction to what happens to you while in it."

So I go to a sandwich shop and drop $29 on two subs, one cold and one hot. Get the cold one and sit down to wait. Get a phone call and realize after a bit everyone who came in after me is gone.

MGR comes over and ask if I got my order. Tell him no, so he ask what was it. I tell him and he comes back and goes I am sorry, not sure where your order went. What did you have again. I tell him and he goes we will get it

Now when I came in the clerk helping me put my cold sandwich in someone else's bag and handed it to me. I corrected that and now figure that is what happened to my hot one.

So get my food and head home.

Open the hot sandwich and not even close to what I ordered.

So I return and am not flying off the handle but expressed my displeasure about how I was not remotely happy.

They fix the order and I find myself apologizing for being rude. Why do I do that? I have every right to be angry but somehow I feel like I have done something wrong.

On a side note they put a guys sandwich into my return bag and tried to give it to the next guy in line after me.

From what I've seen you didn't raise your voice but calmly informed the employee at hand that you didn't get what you ordered and expected. That does not sound like "ranting" to me.

Not too long ago, my wife and I stopped at the local golf course restaurant for a drink and a light dinner. We arrived at about 4:40 and were seated in the bar and given happy hour menus. We ordered drinks, and the waitress said she would be back to take our food order. We waited for what seemed like an eternity for her to return with our drinks. When she did return, we started to order from the menu that she had handed us. She said "Oh I'm sorry but happy hour ended at 5. Let me get you the regular dinner menu." (Of course the prices on the regular dinner menu were essentially double the prices during happy hour.)

You can imagine the conversation that ensued. Long story short, we politely declined ordering from the dinner menu, finished our drinks and left to go eat somewhere else. Sometimes people in the food service industry don't have a lick of good sense.

Simply put, you have found the compassion you have been searching for.. well done

Once at McDonalds drive through gave my order and handed the cashier a $20 bill. She turned around and walked away. Drove up to the take out window, they handed me my order. Politely told them about the cashier, and informed them i wasn't moving till they delivered my change, which was about $12. They got flustered, and insisted i move on till a manager straightened it out. I did not, and this provided the incentive for quick service they wish to be known for.

The cashier had walked off the job with my money.

There is always a matter of degree with the bs we put up with. The more times you walk away, the more bs gets doled out.

Trust but Verify

Check your Take-Out order at the counter.
That is the best time to correct any mistakes.

Some fast food workers can barely make change, even when the register/computer gives them the value On-Screen.

Other seem to suffer from Constipation related to service,
They Don't Give a ****.

We ordered "take out" from a local resturant (not fast food) paid and drove away looked in the bag totally different food. Called them and they said bring it back, which we did. They prepared the correct order refunded our money and said "this one's on us". We loved the place any way, but now they're at the TOP.

Mrs. 57 and I eat out frequently. Service these days, to be kind, is very spotty. Some of our favorite places are great, some others not so much. We both used to be in the restaurant business, and even at our ripe old age, could run circles around many of the servers and bartenders we encounter. I believe a lot of the people working are unfamiliar with how to do their job, and I place the blame squarely on management for not properly training them. Chin up, look around, check on your tables, never head back to the kitchen empty handed...things that should be common sense but apparently no longer are. Given today's environment of many not wanting to work at all, I'm usually pretty tolerant, but what these people don't seem to realize is the better they take care of me, the better I take care of them tip-wise. I've always tipped well for good service but the thing that really burns my biscuit these days is when paying on an iPad while ordering at counter, a tip option is presented prior to receiving food or service...nope.

For the most part, we rarely tip anyone here in Australia. There's always the odd occasion, but for the most part, these Food Service Industry workers are paid better then in other parts of the world, and do not have to rely on tips to form part of their income. Their incentive to give good service is that they get to keep their job.

Now that things have gone cashless (due to Covid) there's even less tipping then before. Tonight, the wife and I went to a pretty good restaurant in the city. Service was good. Paid the bill with EFTPOS, no tip, none excepted, then off we go.

Interesting contrast to how things are traditionally done in the U.S. Having grown up and worked in a tipping environment, I've always adhered to the mindset although I know it's not the standard in other countries. If as you say employees in AU are adequately incentivized by salary to provide good service, great. The current climate in the U.S. seems to have owners/operators so desperate to fill positions with warm bodies that they'll put up with substandard performance. I tend to think that if servers and bartenders are lackadaisical when knowing a significant chunk of their compensation comes from customer gratuities, a guaranteed salary will only make it worse. Cultural difference, I suppose.

If recent news reports are any indication, the proper course of action if your order is wrong / menu item is out / etc. is to pull out a gun and start shooting at the clerk.

326MOD10: I can relate. You are aware of your tendencies and have worked hard to improve. I struggle with a critical spirit and being judgmental. Just keep working at it. Thanks for sharing.
