I finally talked myself into a new 586 L comp. I was skeptical about the finish ( and honestly question its durability), but it is a top notch gun like my other 2 performance centers (629 snub PC, 686 snub PC). For those who have this gun, what do you guys think of the finish and its durability. and has anyone refinished theirs.

I have owned one since 2000 and think very highly of them

When I put them in the safe they had a little baby comp

I bought one a couple weeks ago. Can't tell you my opinion as of yet. I got it home and when darkness fell I found the front sight was stone dead!
It's back in Springfield, hopefully it will be home before long. I really want to run it through it's paces before cold weather.

The front sight of the L Comp has a very small tritium dot. Even after S&W replaces your dead one with a new one, I’m guessing it will still be hard to see except in absolute darkness. This is a complaint about the L-Comp that appears in some of the reviews. In my opinion, this is one of the few things wrong with the gun, and its one that can be overlooked. I replaced my front sight with a standard S&W red front sight, which works well for me.

As to finish, my L-Comp is from the first batch of 200 made in 2000. The finish has held up well, but shows some honest wear from holster carry. I don’t know how the new ones will hold up, but you have to expect some effects on it from use, which to me is acceptable. These are superb guns - mine is amazingly accurate - and I think you will enjoy yours.

In my opinion, it is one of the few things wrong with the gun, and its one that can be either overlooked because everything else about the gun is so good or remedied by installing a different sight post. I had read this about the front sight on these. I could literally get my eye two inches from the front sight in pitch black darkness and not see even a hint of a glow whatsoever!
