Got my new 629 home but...

I purchased this revolver from J&R LLC in Livermore CA. As you can see in the store picture, the finish contained more scratches than I would have preferred on a brand new S&W revolver. I took out most of the scratches with BlueMagic as you can see in the second picture. The barrel is mounted true to the frame and not canted as far as I can tell. However, the trigger doesn't sit perfectly in the center of the trigger guard. I wouldn't have thought to look for this "defect" if other S&W owners had not brought this to my attention. Is the "trigger offset" a real problem or does this happen to most Smith's?

If memory serves me correctly, most all of my Smiths have had a slight offset, some more than others, my J frames do. 686 and 629 do.
Never thought to ask if this was normal I guess.
My 627 is far less noticeable with the offset, but still has a little.

I await responses with baited breath, kinda curious myself.

Wow - the 5" now has an MSRP of $990 - $50 more than the partial lug 4" & 6". I wonder why? The 6" weighs .7 oz more, too. My 629-6 6" was $569 + s/t new 8/05 - you just don't realize how much they've gone up... and those scratches! Sorry it wasn't perfect.

I sent my 29-10 back to S&W because the trigger was offset to the left so much that the bottom edge of it was actually outside the trigger guard.

I think it's not that the trigger's offset, but that the trigger guard was ground down more on one side than the other.

Maybe they will have to replace the frame? I don't know.

The triggers on my three revolvers are offset but still within the trigger guard. The offset is towards the left of the guard as you hold the revolver with the right hand. The 629 is the worst. It almost touches the left edge of the trigger guard.
BTW: My newly purchase 629-6, S/N CSNXXXX, left the factory on 3/24/2012.

I've never experienced the "trigger problem" you speak of but I can relate to the poor finishes coming out these days. Try using some Mother's on it. Remove the cylinder and grips, take your time and give it a thorough cleaning. You will be surprised at how much it will improve the look of your gun. Afterwards, apply a coating of Ren Wax for maximum protection and easier future cleanings.

I wonder if that was a demo gun? How can a gun come in scratched up like that? I have the 5" classic as well that I purchased from Buds last year. Awesome length.

PA, I will try some mothers. Devil, I don't think it was a demo because J&R doesn't have a range. I just came back from the range with my 629. Boy, what a joy to shoot. I use my own reloads and I was very aacurate tonight. I like shooting this revolver better than shoot in my 686 SSR or my 627 PC. The trigger is nowhere as buttery as the 357 Smiths but it was a pleasure. The 629 is now my favorite revolver that I own.
