I just picked up a Governor and really like it. The three options of .45 APC, 410 ga. and .45 LC are really nice. I had a Judge SS 3" BBL and 3" cly and it looks like a piece of junk compared to the Governor. They have been really hard to find in Tampa regardless of what S&W says that they are shipping. Only draw back is pricing as I got the 1st pass at one that just came in but it was the CT laser one which was $200 more. Perfered the non laser for cost but after I recover from the sticked shock it is probably a nice add to my collection. Laser is well done but the CT grips themselves are a little small for my hands. If the cyl was not so wide it could be a great carry piece. I suspect that compared to the Judge and enhanced ammo capabilities that it will remain hard to get for a while.

You'll be very happy with your Governor as I am with mine. Besides being just a lot of fun to shoot, it is a very versatile handgun. The more I shoot mine and try different loads in it, the more I like it. In 410 loads I like the Federal Handgun load of 4 000 buck that groups well. next the Winchester PDX1 load though costlier is a good defense load. There are so many 45 Colt and 45 acp loads that you'll have to experiment to find what shoots best. I even shot some 45 GAP thru it and was impressed. So enjoy your Governor and let us know how it shoots.

Can the Govenor be loaded to higher pressure 45 colt loads (ruger, tc contender only)?

Thanks

I'm tempted to wait for the laser. six months?[/QUOTE

A few months ago I contacted Crimson Trace about the laser grip on the Governor and they advised me that the Crimson Trace LG-306 is the same grip that that comes with Governor minus the S&W envgraving. I supose that the LG-308 would also fit.

I don't see why not, this appears to be a very stout frame. Plus S&W utilizes Scandium frames in several magnum revolvers.

Never had my hands on one but the pictures show the frame to be an extended N-frame and I would never shoot high pressure loads if that is the case, longer does not mean stronger, JMHO.

Had the chance to check out one in a LGS today. While it's not on my gotta have list right now, there's no reason why it wouldn't be in the future. I think I'd wait anyway till supply catches up with demand.

Any reason .45 auto rim wouldn't work as well as the .45 acp with clips? Not that I know anything about the auto rim, just asking.

I would think that would a a big fat NO...

A quick look at the difference in cylinders would show the extra steel in the Ruger. Ruger also off sets the cylinder notches.

Mag318 talked about .45 GAP being used in the Governor ad well ad .45 ACP. Any one else have an opinion on that. Can 45 gap do any damage to the gun?

I just got my Governor about a week ago but havent had a chance to shoot it yet.

How come there is no blastshield like on my other scandium frame revolvers?

The blastshields you refer to are installed on magnum calibre scandium frame revolvers. Since the Governor is chambered for non magnums they felt it wasn't necessary. Over time we'll see if there will be any reports of gas cutting, but hopefully not.

Ahhh. I guess it makes sense. Like you say we'll see. Thanks for the quick reply.

It's funny you should ask that that. We must be on the same wavelength because I was wondering the same thing. My dad and I ordered a matched pair of Governors and received them a couple of weeks ago. I tried .45 Auto Rim in mine and it doesn't work. The rim is too fat. In order to work with both .45 Colt and .45 ACP, the Governor's entire cylinder face is recessed, leaving a ring of metal around the edge of the cylinder face. 45 ACP moon clips sit inside the recess, but 45 Colt rims hook on to the ring of metal to ensure proper headspace. When the Auto Rim is chambered and the rim hooks on to the edge, the rim is too fat to clear the recoil shield. That aside, they are terriffic shooters, firing 45 Colt and 45 ACP to point of aim at 25 yards! Results with the Remington home defense four 000 buckshot load were devastating at 7 yards. The wad even went through the backstop. I did a full range report on mine when we first got them (see earlier thread). Anyway, here's the pair:

I'm thinking about investing in a mooner/demooner to facilitate loading and unloading moon clips. Anyone here have any recommendations?

A little late

mag318: I know I'm a little late on this topic, however if you haven't already tried them, rimz full moon clips are a polymer and don't need a tool to load or unload - I've gone over to just using them to save my fingers!

I bought the neat "moonclip loader" that was recommended in another thread and couldn't be happier. Makes loading and demooning very fast and easy.

Moonclip Loader

Ditto the Moonclip loader, save your fingers and get one!!.

I'm really thinking hard about one of these for a personal carry and house gun.
It just seems to make sense to me to have the versatility of the Governor.

I have a 45 ACP. So I have the usual pile of 45 ACP reloads.
Have any of you ran reloads, and specifically cast bullets through yours? (In any of the recommended caliber loads for it.)

Most likely for me it would see 45 ACP and 410 buck shot loads as a defense firearm.
Inside my home, I would think 20 feet would be the longest imaginable range if ever needed. (I don't live in a palace.) :)

The Federal Handgun 00 buck 410 load is perfect for home defense since it groups tightly. I've tested this load at various distances out to 10 yards and it's impressive out of my Governor. If you do buy one try different loads to see what works best for you.
