Governor

would there be a problem with the cci blazer aluminum ammo
with moon clips ,in the governor?

This is my first posting , just bought a governor

Thanks..

First - welcome to the madness of the S&W Forums. Second - welcome to the madness of the Governor.

Try the brass cased UMC 230gr FMJ loads in the 250 round yellow boxes. They are available at WallyWorld, Academy Sports, Bass Pro Shop, etc, from $85-$90 - that's $17-$18/50. They load in 6-slot Ranch Products moonclips easily by hand. The simple nutdriver de-mooner (Brownell's ~$15) works great - and can store the empties while you search for the ubiquitous ziploc bag to stow them in for the return trip home.

Thanks for the info,
but is it OK ?

to use aluminum cci w/moon clips
this is my 1st pistol w/moon clips..

I tried .45 Auto Rim in mine and it doesn't work. The rim is too fat.

That's a shame but I don't think that'll be too much of a problem since auto rim is a bit hard to come by. ACP is everywhere. That's good info though, especially since many reload auto rim. By the way, nice pair!

I'm thinking about investing in a mooner/demooner to facilitate loading and unloading moon clips. Anyone here have any recommendations?

Brownell's has them and Numrich, just to name a few. Got mine from Brownell's. Highly recommended, and fun to use. There are some fancy one's out there, but I prefer the simple mooner with change-out mandrels (you can get other ones for different calibers) and the separate demooner, which is nothing more than a tube with a notched end to twist out empties (all six fit in the tube). However, they really don't work so well with half and 1/4 moons.

I have heard the aluminum cases don't fit very well in the moons. Stick to brass stuff, it's not that much more expensive. Never really cared for the Blazer in anything.

Their OK

T54Z: I've used Blazer in my full moon clips in the Governor, and they are a BEAR to get all six in, and just about as hard to get out (by hand), but yes you can use them. That said, I posted above about rimz polymer full moon clips work great for me (no I am not a dealer, I just like something that works like it is suposed to) and you don't need an "extra" tool around to load or unload them. Congrats on the new Governor, I love shooting mine.

Here are some pics of the moonclip loader that I now use. You can order different size anvils for the numerous available moon clips. Loading and unloading the clips with this tool is easy and fast. A fellow forum member recommended this one to me and it was a great suggestion.
Loading full moon clips by hand the last, in this case 6'th round is hard to press in. Not so with the moonclip loader.

I called S&W and the support rep I spoke with said that all newer guns didn't have +p indicated on the barrel because they all support +P these days. HUH? My other newer smiths all have +P on the barrel so not sure what he meant. I called because all I got from an email response was " we support all ammo with SAMII specs on the box". Another shrug since half the best name brand ammo on the market doesn't have anything like that on the box. But the second guy, the one on the phone, also told me I could shoot 45acp +P in my Governor but not great idea to practice with.

So I went away more confused than clear and some doubts if the people in customer support actually knew what they were talking about. I was overly polite and friendly and they were overly short and unfriendly, and seemingly very impatient that I was even asking. This account is almost word for word what was said.

So now I have some remington defense +P 45acp rounds loaded for defense but I practice with standard new FMJ name brand loads.

The +P .45 ACP's are rated at 23 kpsi, while regular .45 ACP's are 21 kpsi. The added oomph may mean an 800 fps 230gr bullet from a normal load would make 820-830 fps from a +P load - not a huge difference. My worry over the CCI Blazer Al stems from my use of their .44 Special 200gr Gold Dot Blazer's in my 696/296's years ago. I had one split it's aluminum case in the 696, ending my use of them. I had used thousands of their .45 ACP ball ammo from my 4" 625-8 nine years ago without incident. That use was curtailed when I started adding .45 ACP to my reloading schedule. As has been stated, the Al cased ammo was difficult to load into the Ranch Product steel moonclips, as supplied with S&W .45 ACP revolvers, and often was stiff in the clip, making insertion into the cylinder problematic. I found that Remington and Starline brass loads easily by hand - and their loaded moonclips drop effortlessly into the cylinder almost as if on a tractor beam, if 230gr RN FMJ's are used. They'll spoil you for any other moonclip use, that's for sure. Of course, the el-cheapo WallyWorld 250 round packs of ball ammo are Remington/UMC made - good old Remington brass - the reason I suggest them. Just my opinion from my experience.

Governor nice

I just traded an older 629 ,4" for a CT Governor ,looking forward to shooting more ,and doing some squrriels in ,now that nut season is here .I like the 3 ammo choice ,and the 44 mag was not fun to shoot anymore .Pick up in a week after amendment . I like the idea of a lase sight also.

Smith support told me the gun would handle any new factory made ammo, hot or not, but they would not recommend target practice with hot stuff, just for limited shooting and protection. I wish I could be more helpful and precise but that's just general. In my 3-cell mind the super hot loads might just blow a lot of powder out the end or a bigger fireball since the barrel is so short. And Not sure how that effects the long cylinder. I know the regular 45acp is a total pleasure to shoot and surprisingly accurate. I have the Speer 250gr LongColt45 rounds and some Remington Self Defense 45+P ammo for special visitors, but I dont practice with it. I have shot some very hot loads with no issues at all.
