GPS question for Garmin owners

Looks like it connects to the Internet...but I found this disclaimer: Notice: MSN Direct service will be available only until January 1, 2012. Activate a subscription between November 19, 2009, and April 30, 2010, and receive 9 months of MSN Direct service for free.

I have a Garmin nuvi 1350 that replaced a Tom Tom. The Garmin is much more user friendly.

Here are a few web sites for you:

MSN Direct actually works through an FM transmitter and accesses traffic info, news, weather, etc. The traffic alerts are great - let's you know of an accident or construction along your route and will tell you estimated slowdown time and will re-route you around it.I use it with my Garmin 885T and like it. But, right as I was subscribing I got the note that it was shutting down in 2012 - I just opted to buy an annual membership rather then go for the lifetime service.

I like garmans."turn left at......recalcutating........recalcuating........"
Maybe I should slow down.

I have the older Street Pilot III and love it but it got out of date.

Then I bought a new Nuvi 255W and love it more. Had it about 4 months and found it to be faster, easier to operate and can be used with a lot of extra cost accessories. Funny thing is is cost about 1/5 of what the Street Pilot did.

Heck you would save the $169 cost in fuel in a couple months if you do much driving.

Have a Garmin Nuvi, agree that you'll save enough gas to pay for the unit in short order. Funny thing is, it stops 500 yards from my house telling me "arriving at destination on left". Not that I can't find my house without it. :p

I have a Garmin Nuvi and my only complaint came on a trip to Michigan to visit my son who lives in the suburbs when it took us to downtown Detroit and because I lived in Detroit when I was a kid I knew there were easier and much safer routes to travel. So now in cases like this I just go the way I want and let it recalculate its little computerized butt off.

My Garmin keeps sending me on back roads when there's a perfectly good Interstate nearby. :( One time I was in 4 wheel drive low range before I got through the Jeep trail it sent me on. :)

If you go to "Tools", then click on "Navigation", you can select your preferences as far as type of roads you prefer or want to avoid. Works like a charm........

I was somewhat surprised at the cost of updating the maps with the Garmin. Other brands are probably comparable in that regard. I can buy "lifetime" updates for my Nuvi 255W for about $119.00. But I am having difficulty defining "lifetime".

I agree with this. When in cities I am knowledgeable of the layout, I often see it directing me into bad areas I would normally avoid. I worry when I get to cites I don't know...

A friend of mine says GPS stands for Ghetto and Projects Sensor...

MSN is nice. The gas prices, traffic flow (major cities only) are worth the price. You can get traffic alerts with the FM transmitter they provide (without paying MSN).

With most all of them you will have a choice of "Fastest" way, or "Shortest" distance. Usually the Fastest way will be the best the shortest way can sometimes get you into trouble. I planned a 450 mile trip, and using the shortest way it routed me via numerous 2 lane roads. The Fastest way was nearly all interstate and got me there a couple hours sooner.

Bought my wife a garmin 255w. Doesn't have all the bells and whistles of a newer more expensive model, but works great. Lot less arguing in the car.
