this is just crazy! women driver jokes aside, 17 year olds, male or female are too young to be allowed to participate in pro racing!
how is this even allowed? sure any age can have a mishap but drivers should more experience before being allowed to turn pro.

anyway that's my 2 cents.

She must have been impressed by Danica Patrick's skill (or lack of) and said heck anybody can drive one of them things!

We have a small airport up here on my lake and they have taught all sort of youngsters to fly planes. Glad my house is not under the approach or departure areas!

Some 17-year-olds display remarkable intelligence, insight, and restraint. Others, I wouldn’t trust with a toothpick. The kind of accident seen there can happen to anyone. If there is a pattern of accidents following her around, that’s another matter, but probably little will be done about it administratively. In F1, where only money matters, things take a predictable course.

A Chinese competitor said that the yellow lights came on as they ran down the straight for no good reason. Guy in front of the girl slammed on. As she was draughting she got launched when she ran over his rear wheel. It happens in true open wheel racing, and F3 cars don't have air brakes.

That poor girl hit like a bug on a windshield. She's lucky to be alive. From what I read, the drivers and the fans dislike this course. They say it's a wreck waiting to happen.

Honestly, I don't care or know who is who and who wins what, I watch motorsports for the crashes.

That had to be one wreck for the racing record book.
"Cars don't have air brakes" I thought that was funny. I wonder did her floorboard have an indent behind the brake pedal?
I don't think the driver had time to say OHHHH ...........

I do find it surprising any race car owner would put a 17 year old behind the wheel of a car in a race like this. Racing straight down a track doesn't take as much driver skill as racing on city streets at break neck speeds. That many cars running that close together is sure to have wrecks. Like was said this race is just when not if an accident will happen. I wonder how fast was she going when she went airborne off the car in front of her?

I believe news reports said 171 mph...and it looked like every bit of it.

171MPH? Holy cow that doesn't hardly give a person time to blink let alone react in time. That fast on a street race though a city is unreal.

I would say I would only want to be a spectator and then only a spectator watching on TV.

I've noticed the drivers from Nascar to F1 & Indy cars getting younger and younger. They all grow up behind the wheel, mostly kart racing. Their reaction times are way faster than an older driver but there's something to be said for experience.

Ya well here is a guy with a ton of experience and look what happens.
Richard Petty at 1988 Daytona 500 when he was 51 years old. Best part is right after 2:35

As Mario Andretti said' "Once your car is in the air and flying sideways, it doesn't really matter how good of driver you are".

At 171mph your going over 83.6 yds every second. The average human has a reaction time of .25 seconds Even if your reaction time is twice that fast, if something happens 10 yards in front of you have no time to react as your going to go 10.45 yds in 1/8 of a second and at 171mph the results of what hapens in that last 1/2 a yard are not going to be good.

Unfortunately, open wheel cars on street circuits such as this one are very vulnerable to this. All it takes is the right kind of wheel to wheel contact to launch them like that. It is one of the inherent dangers of open wheel racing and unfortunately for this girl, she got caught out with contact with the car ahead of her who had slowed down before the yellow light was signaled for caution from what I understand. BTW, her age had nothing to do with this crash. Max Verstappen was racing in Formula 1 (pinnacle of open wheel racing) by the time he was 17.

If you think that one was gruesome, you need to google up the clip for the 1996 Toronto IndyCar crash, which resulted in 2 fatalities.

Have you ever driven a Formula 1 car? Protip: it's not like taking your pickup for a spin. Stay in your lane.

I see a dude standing real close to impact at the turn. Anybody see a news report on whether he crapped his pants?

She wasn’t going to make that turn at that speed no matter what.

It isn’t age, it’s talent and track time. Might want to google up Ricardo Rodríguez. He was a very accomplished racer before he was old enough to get a license.

It's amazing how several of you feel free to make disparaging remarks about Sophia Floersch as you have based solely on her age and sex! I would hope such misogynistic cracks would be above forum members, obviously I was wrong!!!!!

No driver gets a "ride" in any professional racing discipline without having exhibited great skill. A driving test is required that I seriously doubt any, or few, of us could even come close to pass successfully. Most racing drivers her age have 8-12 years driving experience in many types beginning with go-karts at the age of 5-7 years.

You should be ashamed of yourselves, and you know who I mean.
