Beautiful S&W! You might find this thread interesting:

An interesting gun, and the placement and work on the gold inlaid ram make it fairly likely that the engraver was the same, if not Angelo Bee.
SHADOE-
Search for Images of Engraved Guns. Firearms have been so adorned since about the 15th Century, and some outstanding examples by Nicholas Noel Boutet (gunmaker to Napoleon 1) and from Beretta are well known and in modern museums and collections. The high grade gun and rifle makers in England and in Italy, Germany, Belgium, and Austria do work that is astounding!
As an artist, I think you'd be thrilled by their better examples, which often include portraits of animals, people, etc. Some of the scroll work is also remarkable.
In this country, the aforementioned Angelo Bee, Edward C. Prudhomme, John Warren, Lynton MacKenzie, and other artists have become famous in their field.
If you follow Doc44's posts on this board, you can sometimes find nice examples of S&W factory engraving.
As for being able to defend yourself, it is not you, but an aggressor, who will determine if you need to defend yourself, unless you are willing to be a victim. It's better to be armed and mentally conditioned ahead of time. I'm sure that your son and your mother would hate to lose you to someone with no regard for human life. Heck, you might even miss yourself!

And we on this board would miss you, too. Welcome to our number.
