Grandson's Mountain Bike Race

I stripped down my Schwinn MKII Jaguar, after this pic was taken, and made it an off-road bike when I was 14 in '61.

Wrapped rope around the tires for a knobby grip.
Tightened the ropes after they got wet and kept riding.
Next morning when the rope dried I had to replace the inner tubes that burst.
Did the same dumb thing with my Ducati 125cc four years later.

Love this. Check out the book "Fat Tire Flyers", don't own it but checked it out at a bike shop, a decade after you were doing it cruisers like that with fat tires led to the MTB community we see today.

Interestingly, there's a bit of a backslide to the roots as well. Gravel bikes/"adventure bikes" are basically drop bar road bikes with slightly beefier tires. No suspension or anything, just hitting mountain biking trails with what are basically early mountain bikes. They're a load of fun for some of the easier mountain bike trails.
