I was perusing Funbroker when I came a cross a seller with an interesting 3" revolver. It is listed as a NIB custom Colt California Combat Python, that was originally 8" but shortened to 3" by Pacific Industries. It is chambered in .357, and includes box, papers, and provenance letter from the factory. It is definitely a handsome revolver, and the asking price is ...

Wait for it ...

$20,000.

If it's cut, it's not origional and therefore not a real "California"...

Wonder what the letter says?

Somebody who cares for this poor, misguided soul should FEDEX him a clue...

You know I look at GB at least once or twice a week and each time I log on I see the prices getting higher and higher - but there MUST be someone who buys this stuff at these ridiculous prices or else they would not keep going up - I would think!

This is especially true for the guns that now seem to have a "Cult" following just as the Colt Python is enjoying now. We should name it the Cult Python!

It's a speculators market. They can ask 20k, but will anyone pay? Unfortunately, the next seller thinks that's the new benchmark, until someone asks for 30k.

Reminds me of the local Pawn Shop. I stop in now and then just to peruse the gun case. Never know when you'll see something that just screams "rescue me!".

However, I've come to learn that they are jacking up the prices, sometimes as much as 20-30% - and this is for USED firearms.

I can only surmise that they are trying for one of two things....

1. Someone will just pay it, because they don't know, and the store makes a killing.

2. They have room to negotiate for someone who DOES know what they're doing.

For example, I poked my head in there on Saturday, and they had 2 SDVEs - a 9 and a 40.

They had the 9 listed for $429. The darn thing is recommended at $379 NEW on S&W's website. I was going to say something, but the guy behind the counter was pestering me about actually looking at something else, so I just left.

I see the same thing at shows, too. You have to be careful. If you don't know what you're looking at, you can get burned.

I think some of the higher prices are carry over from the panic at the beginning of the year. ALL firearms suddenly commanded higher prices. I think pawn shops, some LGSs, and private sellers who speculated in January and February may be trying to recoup the higher prices they paid back then. But that is getting tougher because the "I've always wanted a ( ). Better buy one now!" buyer is out of the market. I'm starting to see some price reductions at LGSs. For example , in January ARs were scarce and going for 150% of list or more, but now the shelves are full of ARs again and one LGS had an AR sale a few weeks ago.

I have noticed that revolvers are still in short supply- but then a revolver doesn't have one of those evil 15 round magazines! Same thing for lever action rifles.

My $.02 on price

We are seeing some of the "buyer's hangover" on the morning after the panic of 2012-2013 me thinks :)

There is no way to know what percentage of last winter's 'new' buyers did so with their plastic. My guess is most first time buyers didn't pay cash out of pocket. The cost of that gun can go up quickly if you add carrying charges when it is time to sell. Remember a portion of the first time buyers are now rethinking their investment & trying to get their money back. A few newbies set the new standard of price & the rest we are seeing in the used market is "monkey see, monkey do" following along with the idea of "if it works for him, why can't I?".

PS;

Like Grampa used to say, "every time I see a cow eat grass I'm reminded "this too will pass'."

Fer 20 grand it autta come with a little feller to pick up yer brass and wipe 'er down after a good workout at the range. Or at least a new diamond encrusted shark-skin holster to tote it 'round.

The OP's holding back critical information on us...

Is there a "buy it now" option, or do I have to bid against all you guys?

:D

There was/is a big discussion on that over on that other forum. Some claim its a bogus deal and the gun has been floating around a long time. One guy won the auction for $10,000s and was going to fly his ffl dealer friend by airplane to look at it! That would be almost another $1,500 or so to check it! (paid exspends). Some guys that seemed to know what they were talking about talked him out of it so it must have went even higher! I got in the act by letting my mouth overload my butt and posted it "might" be time to sell my 2 1/2" bright nickle python. I immediatly got 4 e-mails wanting to buy it for in the $4,000 range! I wrote back I didnt need the money unless I was going to buy a new side X side atv and selling just one gun wouldnt do it unless I was ready to sell a couple of dozzen or so, and I aint ready to do that! This deal has to be the same gun?

No Hillbilly, If you submit a bid I will reluctantly shy away from pursuing this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own such an amazing piece and yield to your keen sense of value and your astute eye for collectables.

Besides, I'm sure I can pick it up for mere pennies on the dollar once Mrs. Hillbilly finds out and, you know, they settle your estate after your sudden and untimely demise.:D;)

Hmmmm
since someone seems to think mods add value ... I guess I could round up a pile of RG's and really clean up after a deft thwack from a sledge.
if the theory holds, I could probably turn the enhanced versions for 1500 for a 10000% profit margin
