FWIW, they are only called the Great Dane in English speaking countries as far as I know. Elsewhere, they are properly referred to as a "German Mastiff" (Deutsche Dogge). They are, however, great dogs. I have met several and liked them all.

That's my all time favorite breed of dog.
As a kid I always wanted 2 kinds of dogs. Bassett hound - which I owned for bout 8 years (before kids). Never pulled the trigger on a Great Dane yet...
Maybe when I get some kiddos out of the house.

I hope you can tell which one is me. He was 9 months old in this pic, he's grown some since.
He, and our first Dane, Jimmy, were both rescues from people who bought puppies and were surprised at how big they got and how fast. Both were the most gentle dogs we've ever had the luck to have as friends. Great intuition regarding when to get a little protective also.

This one just cracks me up. It's rather obvious that is still "her" chair even though she has totally outgrown it. They are a simply wonderful breed, it's just a shame they live such short lives.

We used to have a great dane, but It wasn't quite satisfying enough....
Never met a Dane that didn't love a couch. They don't allow much room for anybody else.

The only thing that bothers me....
I LOVE big dogs but generally their life spans are shorter than other dogs. I'd like to get where I lose pets at longer intervals. I couldn't stand it otherwise.
That may be old fashioned thinking. With good care all of our animals have had long life spans if something else didn't interfere.

EDIT: I keep coming back for another look. If I had a horse and a room large enough, I would do exactly this same thing. I have saved this photo in my computer, so any time I need a smile, I can click on it.
