hello all,
Just joined here, from Ohio. Got my CHL about a month ago and just picked up my first gun. An M&P Shield 9 mm. I passed my CHL class with one at the class and went ahead and decided I liked it so much I stopped researching what I wanted for my EDC. Looking forward to picking up some pointers from this forum

Welcome from Florida! First suggestion is an Uplula mag loader, love 'em as I do, the Shield's mag is a PITA. It's okay though, it is a wonderful little pistol.

Welcome from your neighbor to the West-Indiana! All my M&P's are Full Size, but I may add a Shield 9 at some point in the future. Enjoy :-)

Welcome from Southern Illinois.
It is a fine piece but it is always hungry! I swear it even consumes ammo at night while I am asleep. I have to keep them separated.
You could spend more for another gun, but I don't think you would any better. The shield is worth every penny!

Welcome from NH. Congrats on the Shield. Some of the things I've experienced / picked up from this forum have been really valuable so feel free to poke around.

My personal experience with the Shield is that I couldn't wait to take this "little gun" to the range and have some fun with it when I first bought it. All I can say after shooting it is that the Shield no longer strikes me as a "little gun" just to have fun with. It's a beast and totally changed my perspective on it. It might be a little package but performs like a champ! My son shot 250 rounds out of his brand new Shield 9 without even cleaning it first. Not a single issue with it. I don't recommend this obviously but not all guns will run right from the factory like that.

Anyway, enjoy the Shield and start stocking up on ammo!

Welcome & congrats on your new CHL.... The M&P Shield is an excellent carry gun. I have both the Shield 9 & shield 40. The tough part is deciding which one to carry as they are both excellent shooters.

My advice is.....2 things.. get as much practice shooting your shield as possible. Not only at the shooting range, but outdoor shooting ranges too if possible and most importantly, try to get involved in IDPA as it is designed to simulated "real world" self-defense scenarios using practical handguns and holsters that are suitable for self-defense use.

Second. learn as much as you can about the laws & legal consequences regarding using deadly force. I feel its vital for any CHL to at least be very knowledgable on the law. Not so much for yourself, but to educate the sheeple.

Keep your pistol clean & buy lots of ammo!

Appreciate the warm welcome and all the advice! I ran 100 rounds through it without issue right out of the box. Did a thorough cleaning when I got back. Still lots to learn about ammo and laws amongst other things. I did add a set of Talon Grips and picked up 2 more extended round mags for the range. Seemed to help ease the loading of mags by loading them up the night before I went to the range. the trigger feels great as well. Of course I don't know what an Apex kit feels like so I don't really know what I'm missing there. Think I'll leave the trigger alone for the time being. Sights will be changed next week though.

I looked at one of those in the store. Sales guy and my buddy seemed to think I didn't need the uploader. Think my sore thumb disagrees. I should probably practice loading without it anyways. But it's probably good for the range.

The Uplula is small enough to bring along to the range! It's your thumb. On the topic of the trigger, get about 500 through the gun before you start pondering an Apex, it gets better and better as it breaks in. My Shield's trigger was far better than my Pro Series out of the box. I put the Apex in that, but see no point with the Shield.

Also a newbie

I just recently bought a M&P Shield 9mm as my concealed carry gun and joined this forum to talk with Shield and other Smith and Wesson owners.

Welcome from SW Ohio. The Shield triggers are better than the other M&P's to start with, but I put the DCAK in mine 2 yrs again and can't tell a difference between the newer Shields. So as other have said, get an Uplula, a set of Talon rubber grips, nite sights and shoot away.
